Class action claims Selsun Blue causes scalp irritation and hair loss

Toxic chemicals in the anti-dandruff shampoo Selsun Blue can actually aggravate scalp problems and even lead to hair loss, a class action lawsuit claims.

Lead plaintiff Emily Lewis accuses the shampoo maker, Sanofi-Aventis, of failing to inform consumers about toxic ingredients like selenium sulfide used in the product.

Lewis says she purchased Selsun Blue in 2020 based on marketing that it could help eliminate her dandruff and dry scalp. However, after using the product twice a week as directed, she claims her hair became brittle and began falling out. She also did not see an improvement in her dandruff.

In addition to selenium sulfide, the complaint contends that Selsun Blue products contain a preservative called DMDM Hydantoin. The plaintiff says that this ingredient can cause irritation and even release formaldehyde, which is another toxic chemical.

Further, Sanofi fails to disclose scalp irritation and hair loss as a potential side effect of using Selson Blue products, alleges the lawsuit. Lewis says that she and other consumers wouldn’t have purchased the product if they knew about the toxic ingredients.  Indeed, the complaint points to reviews on the online retailer Amazon complaining about the false advertising of Selsun Blue.

The class action lawsuit seeks to represent a nationwide class of consumers who purchased and used Selsun Blue products within the past three years, along with a subclass of Illinois residents.

This is not the first class action to be lodged over Selsun Blue. In December, a consumer filed a complaint in New York federal court claiming the manufacturer made false claims about the product being “natural.”

Hi I had some itchy dryness spots on my scalp so I bought the selsum blue which I don’t have the receipt but I still have the bottle. I used it a few times about 3-4 weeks ago and my hair started falling out in clumps and it irritated my scalp more. I am still losing my hair. I. Hoping it stops soon or I will be bald.

I wasn’t sure what the cause of my hair loss was but after using selsun blue for scalp itchiness I noticed redness in the crown of my head and the following weeks I started losing hair. My hair is now thinned slightly. I’m 32 so I thought it might be age related but I stopped using the shampoo just incase because I found the excessive fragrance in the product nauseating . If this product is the reason for my hair loss I would like to see the company take responsibility for it and take their product off the market!

Used Selsun blue twice a week for about a year, got rid of dandruff for a while and then it came back and I noticed active hair loss and Even drier scalp. Hair loss was really bad around the hairline.

My son uses this now I know why his hair is coming out so easy plus his scalp has been so irritated that it bleeds.

  10. Ginger Gonzalez says:

We’ve been using selsun blue for years. Never thought the scalp irritability and hair loss was caused by selsun blue. My husband now prefers to shave his head. But you can still noticed half of his hair is completely gone. Sad his hair will never be the same. My daughter has lost tons of hair. Luckily her hair is very thick. But now I can explain why she’s been loosing chunks of hair by the handful. And myself have lost lots of hair too. My hair is now very thin.
