Class action claims Selsun Blue causes scalp irritation and hair loss

Toxic chemicals in the anti-dandruff shampoo Selsun Blue can actually aggravate scalp problems and even lead to hair loss, a class action lawsuit claims.

Lead plaintiff Emily Lewis accuses the shampoo maker, Sanofi-Aventis, of failing to inform consumers about toxic ingredients like selenium sulfide used in the product.

Lewis says she purchased Selsun Blue in 2020 based on marketing that it could help eliminate her dandruff and dry scalp. However, after using the product twice a week as directed, she claims her hair became brittle and began falling out. She also did not see an improvement in her dandruff.

In addition to selenium sulfide, the complaint contends that Selsun Blue products contain a preservative called DMDM Hydantoin. The plaintiff says that this ingredient can cause irritation and even release formaldehyde, which is another toxic chemical.

Further, Sanofi fails to disclose scalp irritation and hair loss as a potential side effect of using Selson Blue products, alleges the lawsuit. Lewis says that she and other consumers wouldn’t have purchased the product if they knew about the toxic ingredients.  Indeed, the complaint points to reviews on the online retailer Amazon complaining about the false advertising of Selsun Blue.

The class action lawsuit seeks to represent a nationwide class of consumers who purchased and used Selsun Blue products within the past three years, along with a subclass of Illinois residents.

This is not the first class action to be lodged over Selsun Blue. In December, a consumer filed a complaint in New York federal court claiming the manufacturer made false claims about the product being “natural.”

I have very thick healthy hair. A few weeks ago I started losing hair by the handful. It was all over my scalp not just one location. We checked my medications and t hey we’re all fine. I had blood work done and everything looked good. All of a sudden I started wondering about my shampoo, Selena Blue. I’ve been using it for about a month or a little more. Much to my surprise I found that it can cause major hair loss. I am losing more hair than I did with chemo. That was 16 years ago. I’m going to have to go with a shorter haircut to help with the loss.

  9. Laurie Burghezi says:

Been using Selsun Blue Moisturizing for itching scalp for many months. Noted some hair fall after a month or so but didn’t think much about it until it began falling out in droves.. I already have very fine hair so it is very noticeable now.. It never dawned on me it was the shampoo, after all it’s supposed to help right? Had blood tests and everything is normal. It says it can be used routinely I began to research hair loss and product use as a reason for hair loss came up.. This is when I looked up side effects of Selsun Blue.. I was very surprised and now very worried as I have stopped the product yet, my hair is still falling out. I’m hoping it will eventually improve….

I bought selsum blue based on my doctor recommendation for my daughters dandruff. After one use of a pea sized amount, my daughter hair became brittle, damaged, and hair loss occurred. She now has half the amount of hair. It continues to shed. Difficult to repair after the damage is done
