UPDATE 2:

  • This case was dismissed March 23, 2022.

UPDATE:

  • The OGX shampoo lawsuit has been making its way through the court with the plaintiff filing an amended complaint recently.
  • The class action lawsuit seeks to represent consumers who purchased various OGX hair products, including OGX Biotin+ Collagen Shampoo or Conditioner, OGX Renewing Argan Oil of Morocco Shampoo or Conditioner, Extra Strength Hydrate & Repair and Argan Oil of Morocco Shampoo or Conditioner, OGX Ever Straightening and Brazilian Keratin Therapy Shampoo or Conditioner, OGX Quenching + Coconut Curls Shampoo or Conditioner, along with others.

The OGX-brand shampoos and conditioners marketed by Johnson & Johnson to nourish and smooth your hair actually contain a combination of ingredients that cause significant hair loss, a new nationwide class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Larissa Whipple filed the class action lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson Consumer Inc. Monday in an Illinois federal court, alleging violations of state and federal laws.

Whipple says she bought OGX shampoo and conditioner because of Johnson & Johnson’s “false representation” that they would smooth, nourish, soften, repair, and revive her hair.

What wasn’t disclosed is that OGX hair products also include an ingredient or combination of ingredients that causes significant hair loss and scalp irritation upon proper application, she says.

“At least one ingredient in the Products, DMDM hydantoin, is a formaldehyde donor known to slowly leach formaldehyde when coming into contact with water,” Whipple says.

“Formaldehyde is a well-known human carcinogen that can cause cancer and other harmful reactions when absorbed into skin.”

The OGX products class action lawsuit says DMDM hydantoin has been used as a preservative in Johnson & Johnson products for well over a decade. However, it says the use of DMDM hydantoin as a preservative creates an unnecessary risk, because safer natural alternatives exist.

“As such, the Products are rendered dangerous and unsafe for sale as over-the-counter hair smoothing shampoo products,” says the OGX shampoo lawsuit.

Whipple says Johnson & Johnson failed to properly warn consumers of the dangers associated with using such a strong ingredient on their hair and scalp, even though it knew the risks.

“Defendant continued to conceal the dangers of the Products by failing to appropriately and fully recall the Products, by continuing to claim the Products were safe when properly applied, and by failing to warn consumers of the dangers attendant to the Products’ use,” alleges the OGX shampoo class action.

The plaintiff says, instead, Johnson & Johnson says OGX hair products contain special formulas intended to nourish and revive damaged or dry hair. She says she and thousands of other customers have experienced hair loss and scalp irritation as a result of the false misrepresentations.

Whipple is seeking to represent anyone in the United States who bought OGX shampoo and conditioner products, plus a consumer fraud multistate subclass and an Illinois Subclass.

She is suing for violation of state consumer fraud acts, Illinois consumer laws and unjust enrichment and seeking certification of the class action, damages, restitution, an injunction, a recall of all the OGX hair products and a jury trial.

American multinational corporation Johnson and Johnson is a household name, known for developing numerous consumer products, medical devices and pharmaceutical items that frequent the shelves of department stores. Many of the company’s products have been reported by consumers as being faulty or hazardous, leading to a range of class actions lawsuits being filed.

Johnson and Johnson is not the only company who has been targeted with such class action lawsuits. In June, a Unilever class action lawsuit was filed for similar hazardous products issues with its Suave haircare products. A class action lawsuit was also filed against Mane ‘n Tail products for ingredients which allegedly led to scalp irritation and other problems.

I’ve been using ogx shampoo and conditioner for a very long time. After reading ,this now I know what is going on with my hair falling out and my scalp looks pink. I get sores in my head but I just thought it was from aging, or medication that I take. I just bought more bottles of this shampoo and conditioner. I love the smell and I always trusted Johnson and Johnson. I also just bought a huge bottle of the baby lotion. I’m having acne pop up on my face and I’ve never had acne before!! I hope this hasn’t caused any serious health issues for me or anyone else who’s taken the time to fill this out. I didn’t know J&J even made this shampoo!! If I wouldn’t have read this article I wouldn’t of known anything about this crap!!

I have used OGX products for years.I bought it because I thought it was good for my hair.I even bought the Biotin shampoo because my hair
was coming out by the handfuls. It is so thin & dead looking.I can just run my fingers through it & don’t even use a brush.I can’t layer my hair
because it is so thin.I can see my scalp.I am embarresed about my hair.I always had thick hair.I never thought about it being my shampoo.I
have tried all kinds of OGX shampoos.I wish I had my hair back.I.am a Cosmetologist which makes it worst.I can’t do anything with my hair.

I have been using OGX for sometime and have noticed significant hair loss that has given me emotional stress and anxiety about it I had no idea until reading this article of the severe consequences using this product

I used OGX coconut shampoo for a couple years and experienced hair loss. I thought it was from age. I’m 72.

  5. Pamela Dickert says:

I started using OGX Biotin shampoo and conditioner about 3 years ago and have noticed my hair thinning since then. I didn’t associate it with the shampoo. I will now stop using this because what used to be a thick head of hair is now thinning to where it is very noticeable. Please add me to this class action!

I just found out about the ingredients DMDM & formaldehyde being in OGX shampoo products by reading a Newsbreak article March 17, 2024 & a class action lawsuit about it. I had heard nothing about it before anywhere. I have been having problems with a lot of hair loss for at least 2 years or more but was blaming some of the medicines I have to take which can cause hair loss as a side effect plus I am over 60. I have been using OGX Biotin + Collegen shampoo & conditioner for more than 2 years or more and my hair loss is getting worse. So now I am suspecting the OGX hair products as well. My PCP was surprised at how much hair I had lost & is sending me to a Dermatologist but I can’t get an appointment until April. I had been complaining about my hair loss to 2 Drs. for a long time & they weren’t really listening mostly because I was wearing headcovers until my new PCP asked to see my hair. I am stopping use of the OGX shampoo & conditioner & trying a different product without the DMDM etc. I don’t know if I have a case or not but I do hope my hair loss stops and I can get some new growth with proper products. I am taking vitamins for my hair & skin.

I have had the same experience. I love the way my hair looks with the OGX 2nd and full biotin and collagen shampoo but I have noticed hair loss that I am becoming concerned about. I thought it might be due to my meds or age, but I am definitely going to be switching shampoos.

  7. Tristian says:

I have been using the Ogx Hydrating + teatree mint shampoo and conditioner for over 4 years and have had hair loss regularly, every shower has hair in the drain. I thought I just hit that age when hair loss starts. I also had my son start using this a few years ago since I did like how soft my hair was after the shower and we recently noticed his hair does look thinner than a few years ago. The current bottles do not show DMDM in the ingredients but we have one of the older ones my son forgot about which does list it. I am trying to find more info on the lawsuits and if there are any accepting other consumers.

  8. Elaine Anne Cefola says:

I use OGX products for my hair, Biotin-othrr minerals. I’ve been also dealing w my own hair loss too. I had no idea it could be the shampoo and conditioner. I thought it was my prescription frugsnmm

  9. Ingrid Atoyan says:

Noticed major hair loss using OGX Biotin+ Collagen Shampoo or Conditioner. It really messed up my hair as far as texture and the amount of hair loss during cleaning and brushing hair. The worst part is that this product came so highly recommended. Use of “Biotin and Collagen” is false advertisement. I used it for almost a year until I realized that the amount of hair loss was more and more with each washing.

  10. Diane Kusky says:

As I have gotten older I started using OGX biotin shampoo and conditioner as a precautionary measure. I’ve been using it for several years, but didn’t use it every day.
At one point about 3 years ago my hair started falling out for no reason. Clumps would fall out. The Dr’s thought I had lupus, but I didn’t. I’ve always switched shampoos and conditioners just so nothing will build up. But at that time I was using the OGX more frequently thinking I needed the biotin. It didn’t help but I did not relate my hair loss to using it. Since then I have still been using it about once or twice every 3 weeks. My hair has stayed thin and I now have noticed that much more hair falls out when using OGX. After reading this I stopped using OGX and now I have normal hair loss, a couple of strands per wash. Since there was no medical reason for my hair loss it was blamed on Covid. Funny thing tho’ I don’t have much hair loss when using other shampoos. If it was due to Covid it wouldn’t matter what shampoo i used. It’s a shame that this company won’t take responsibility for what it has done and do something to help us regain our hair.
