Applying a mud maskIn recent years, there has been a growing popularity of sparkly unicorn merchandise, from clothing to toys to drinks and more. For the most part, unicorn-themed anything and everything is harmless fun, but one particular unicorn-themed product has been recalled after consumer complaints.

Yes To Inc., a beauty company that bases its products on fruits and vegetables, has issued a Yes To Grapefruit Unicorn Paper Mask recall after customers reported experiencing skin irritation and redness.

The product descriptionon Yes To’s site for the unicorn paper mask reads, in part: “This mask will make your skin care fantasies come true, as it helps reveal a bright, glowing, naturally more even-looking complexion.”

However, in the Yes To Grapefruit Unicorn Paper Mask recall announcement, the company noted that “we have recently seen reports on social media that children have used the Grapefruit Vitamin C Glow-Boosting Unicorn Paper Mask unfortunately resulting in skin irritation. We have also received similar reports from adults who have used the product. As such, we have decided to pull this product off of the shelves while we investigate the complaints that we have received and seen online.

“While our products are all independently tested for safety, irritation, and allergy—and while we provide both warnings and instructions on our products about the potential for skin irritation—the safety and satisfaction of our customers are our main concerns.”

A customer who purchased the paper mask posted on Target’s Facebook page, saying that within three minutes of applying the face mask, her skin began to react. “My skin is now red and swollen and feels like extreme sunburn,” the poster wrote.

Customers reported to Buzzfeed News that it wasn’t just the unicorn paper mask that was causing issues. Consumers have waged similar complaints about a coconut face mask and a charcoal face mask.

While the voluntary Yes To Grapefruit Unicorn Paper Mask recall was issued by the company on Jan. 3, 2020, many customers said they never heard about it. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the recall two weeks later, on Jan. 16, 2020.

After the Yes To Grapefruit Unicorn Paper Mask recall, the company pulled the product from major U.S. retailers, including Target and Ulta.

Now, the FDA is investigating complaints that both children and adults have experienced skin irritation issues with the paper mask.
