Update:

  • A class action lawsuit accusing Mane n’ Tail of selling shampoo and conditioner that can cause hair loss and damage to the scalp has been voluntarily dismissed in a New York federal court.
  • The consumer behind the complaint gave notice to have her complaint voluntarily dismissed without prejudice in “consideration of the Court’s concerns regarding Plaintiff’s sur-reply.”
  • The consumer argued that the Mane n’ Tail shampoo and conditioner products contained ingredients that could form into formaldehyde, a carcinogen.
  • The consumer further accused Mane n’ Tail of knowing about the alleged issue but choosing not to disclose it to consumers.

(May 19, 2021)

A New York consumer says that Mane ‘n Tail shampoo and conditioners contain ingredients that can form the known carcinogen formaldehyde, but the manufacturer kept this information secret from the public.

Lead plaintiff Brenda Ryan, filed a nationwide class action lawsuit in New York federal court Wednesday against the maker of Mane ‘n Tail hair care items, Straight Arrow Products, Inc. Ryan claims that Straight Arrow is dodging the truth when it comes to the ingredients in its hair care line and has done so for more than a decade.

The class action lawsuit alleges that Mane ‘n Tail shampoos and conditioners “contain an ingredient or combination of ingredients that causes significant hair loss and/or scalp irritation upon proper application. At least one ingredient in the Products, DMDM hydantoin, is a formaldehyde donor known to slowly leach formaldehyde when coming into contact with water.”

Indeed, Ryan claims that she relied on Straight Arrow’s marketing of Mane ‘n Tail that declared the hair products would “would restore, revitalize, recondition, refreshen, nourish, fortify, moisturize, strengthen, and/or clean her hair from root to tip” when she purchased an item from the line.

Ryan says that shortly after she started using the product, she suffered severe scalp irritation and several “massive bald spots on her head.” She claims she continued to use Mane ‘n Tail for two months and the problems only started to gradually diminish when she stopped.

The class action lawsuit contends that the company represents that its products, originally derived from shampoo and conditioner that could be used on humans as well as horses, are made with high quality and safe ingredients both online and on Mane ‘n Tail packaging. Though the dangers of some of the ingredients in the hair products have been well documented for nearly 10 years, Straight Arrow continues to use them and market them as safe to consumers, alleges the lawsuit.

“Despite having public knowledge since at least 2012 that DMDM hydantoin, as a formaldehyde donor, can cause or contribute to hair loss and scalp irritation, Straight Arrow has inexplicably continued to include this ingredient as a preservative in some of its Mane ‘n Tail products while simultaneously not using DMDM hydantoin as a preservative in many of its other Mane ‘n Tail products,” states the class action lawsuit.

Ryan claims that Straight Arrow misleads consumers about the safety of the following Mane ‘n Tail products:

  • Gentle Clarifying Shampoo
  • Gentle Clarifying Conditions
  • Anti-Dandruff Conditioner
  • Herbal Gro Conditioner

The class action lawsuit seeks to represent consumers across the nation who purchased Mane ‘n Tail products containing the allegedly harmful ingredients. Ryan is seeking damages on their behalf, as well as an injunction stopping the alleged false advertising by Straight Arrow.

I started using this product 2 months ago after seeing it recommended by someone on tiktok. Unfortunately, after a month using it, I noticed an increase in my hair coming out with washing and brushing. I downplayed it and didn’t think anything of it. I didn’t realize that there was a significant problem until I washed my hair a week ago and noticed that my hair was so thin! My hair is usually very healthy. It’s now super thin and dull. The only thing that I had changed was my shampoo and conditioner, so it has to be this product causing my hair to literally fall out. I am beyond devastated and have been in tears the last couple of days. Hair is so important to women; it makes us feel beautiful. It also takes so long for it to grow back. This product should be banned and those of us affected should be compensated for the distress that this hair loss has caused.

I have been using this product for over 10 +years this is my family go to shampoo & conditioner.Just like everybody else I relied on the authenticity of this product,But I pray that everyone of our hair follicles be restored and justice to all in Jesus name Amen

I’ve been using the Mane N Tail shampoo and conditioner for about three months. The first time I used it, it left my hair beautiful and shining. But now after a few washes, my hair is drying out and looking dead and my scalp was left with red patches and itchy. I have long curly hair and my hair was very much healthy before I started using this Mane n Tail shampoo and conditioner. Now my hair is thinning and my curls are barely curls. I was so confused on why my hair looks like this but then I quickly realized that I started using a new shampoo and conditioner. I went on Google and search for reviews on the Mane N Tail and I found this site. Looks like a lot of people are going through the same thing I’m going through and it’s so heartbreaking. This shampoo and conditioner should not be sold in stores or at all. This shampoo and conditioner should not be sold in stores or at all.

I’ve been using Mane and tsle shampoo for about 5 years, I started to notice my hair was frizzle, I went to my beautician 2 weeks ago she said my hair is falling out and very thin, and my scalp was always itchy, so I check the Mane and tail shampoo and found out, through a website that it causes irritation, frizzy and hair loss.

  5. Michelle Edmonds says:

My sister used mane n tail and now has huge bald spots and I can take pictures and send to you. Please add me I’m her representative.

  6. Magaly Rascon says:

I didn’t know why my hair was actually falling off so much! I thought I was going through something. I was so scared. I was using both the shampoo and conditioner. My tub at the end of my shower had so much hair in the drain! I was like what the heck? My husband too thought that I was experiencing something traumatic, stress maybe? But no, I wasn’t stressed but this losing my hair was making me stressed. So I decided to stop using the shampoo and conditioner and whala… what do u know, no more hair in my drain. I will not refer this shampoo & conditioner to anyone. I literally have balding spots and my hair is even thinner than it was b4 I started. I tried it cause I read the reviews and I thought it was to regrow or thicken your hair…boy was I wrong. So sad.

  7. Angel says:

  8. Jaanu Govind says:

Used the Mane and Tail shampoo alone for the first time today, and believe it or not, I had a chunk of hair fall out. I was petrified looking at the amount of hair I lost. Never again will touch it. My $10 was burnt just like that.

  9. Jessica says:

I’ve used mane and tail for years when I was a child. I stopped using it for a few years and now have been using it going on 4 years. Been having extreme hair loss and sores that hurt on my scalp. After reading this and glad I looked it up, I’m throwing it away. I’ll never use it again.
