Algenist Collagen Products Class Action Lawsuit Overview:

  • Why: Nguyen alleges that some of Algenist’s collagen products are falsely advertised as being “vegan” and having anti-aging properties.
  • Who: Plaintiff Catherine Nguyen filed a false advertising class action lawsuit against Algenist LLC.
  • Where: The lawsuit was filed in New York federal court.

Algenist LLC is facing a class action lawsuit alleging it makes misleading representations about the “anti-aging” benefits provided by its collagen products.

Algenist markets and sells collagen products as proprietary skin care that offers “advanced anti-aging” benefits and “restore[s] bounce and resilience with active vegan collagen,” according to the lawsuit.

Plaintiff Catherine Nguyen alleges Algenist’s representations about the anti-aging and skin-firming benefits provided by the collagen products are false and misleading because collagen molecules are too large to penetrate the top layer of skin.

Therefore, collagen is essentially worthless as a topical product, according to the Algenist class action lawsuit.

Algenist’s claim that its collagen products are “vegan” are also false and misleading, Nguyen alleges. Because collagen is derived from animals and cannot be produced from plants, it is not possible to have a “vegan” collagen product, the lawsuit alleges.

The Algenist products that are allegedly labeled as containing vegan or vegetable “collagen” include Algenist Genius Collagen Calming Relief, Algenist Genius Liquid Collagen and Algenist Genius Sleeping Collagen.

Class Action: Consumers Relied on False Representations When Purchasing Algenist Collagen Products

Collagen is a structural protein in animal and human connective tissues and helps to build bones, skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments and hair, according to the Algenist class action lawsuit. Collagen production slows with age and can cause people to experience sagging and wrinkles as they age.

To combat these visible signs of aging, many consumers seek out collagen skin care products to replace the natural levels of collagen lost due to aging. The global collagen market was valued at over $4 billion in 2018 and is expected to increase to more than $6.6 billion by 2025, the lawsuit says.

Nguyen says she relied on Algenist’s representations that its collagen products contained “collagen” that would “provide anti-aging benefits” when she purchased the products.

She says that, had she known that Algenist collagen products were not capable of providing anti-aging benefits, she would have either paid less for them or would not have purchased them at all.

Nguyen filed the Algenist class action lawsuit on behalf of herself and a proposed class of consumers who purchased Algenist products that purportedly contained “vegan collagen” that would provide “advanced anti-aging” benefits.

I absolutely love the Collagen Calming Relief – it’s the best cream I’ve ever used on my 52 year old face. It’s calming, restorative, soothing , hydrating, leaves my skin looking fresh and rested the next day. I have tricky acne prone sensitive skin and I would loathe this item to ever be discontinued. It’s brilliant.

  2. S.chambers says:

I bought the topical for skin and lips. Then researched collagen in general, which states topical can’t be absorbed bc it’s too large a molecule, and even supplements need to be at least 6000 daltons.

I love thé 360 eye serum and was wondering for years how they were able to promote collagen products given the research undermines their claims.
