Devacurl Hair Loss Settlement Overview:

  • Who: Consumers say DevCurl hair products caused scalp irritation, hair loss, and other damage despite claims the line was more gentle than competitors.
  • Why: A $5.2 million class action settlement has been submitted for preliminary approval, potentially leading to Class Member awards between $20 and $19,000.
  • Where: The settlement agreement covering a nationwide Class of consumers has been submitted in New York federal court.

The plaintiffs in several class action lawsuits alleging DevaCurl products caused hair loss and scalp irritation filed documents asking a New York judge to approve a proposed $5.2 million settlement featuring $20 rebates and up to $19,000 awards for Class Members Monday.

A motion for preliminary approval of the DevaCurl hair loss class action settlement stated that the deal “provides excellent relief for the Settlement Class Members.” If approved, Class Members will be able to make either or both of the following claims:

  • A $20 class action rebate for minor personal injuries suffered as a result of DevaCurl hair products
  • Up to $19,000 in reimbursements for documented injuries, emotional distress, and provable expenses for adverse reactions to DevaCurl products.

Class Members include consumers nationwide who purchased or used DevaCurl hair products in the United States between Feb 8, 2008 and thirty days after the date that the class action settlement agreement is approved.

The estimated number of Class Members is more than 665,000, according to court documents.

Claims will be able to be filed either online on the yet to be posted settlement website or by mail.

In addition to paying $5.2 million, Deva Concepts, the maker of DevaCurl products, has agreed to certain labeling changes under the terms of the settlement agreement.

“Plaintiffs have negotiated a fair, adequate, and reasonable Settlement that guarantees

Settlement Class Members significant relief,” says the motion for preliminary approval of the DevaCurl hair loss class action settlement.

Top Class Actions will continue to monitor developments in this settlement and will let viewers know when they can submit a DevaCurl hair loss claim.

DevaCurl Hair Loss Complaints Mount

Deva Concepts was hit with a rash of class action lawsuits filed by consumers claiming they paid a premium for DevaCurl hair products based on representations that the products are less harsh than other products available on the market. Instead, the plaintiffs say that they suffered shedding and hair loss due to harsh ingredients Deva Concepts hid from consumers.

The proposed $5.2 million class action settlement is not the only legal matter pending against Deva Concepts. A class action lawsuit was filed in Canada last year alleging similar DevaCurl hair loss claims.

The company also faces angry customers who have taken to social media to complain about DevaCurl hair loss including a Facebook group that reports more than 50,000 members. On Instagram, a search for #RecallDevaCurl reveals more than a thousand posts from consumers urging Deva Concepts to recall the product.

DevaCurl products are not the only hair care line  linked to scalp irritation and severe side effects. Class action lawsuits claiming side effects from Suave Professionals shampoo and conditioner, Selsun Blue anti-dandruff shampoo, and TRESemmé keratin shampoo and conditioner have all been filed by consumers in recent months.

Myself and my son have been using Deva Curl products, shampoos, conditioners, mask, deep conditioner, curl activator, gels and hairspray faithfully for a long time and have lost two thirds of our hair, he now has dandruff which he never did!!! We both have major skin irritation and have lost almost all of our curl and are left with what seems to be fried dry brittle hair now!!!! So angry! We both had beautiful uniformed moisture filled curls before ? my daughter used it for only a few days when visiting and left with extremely dry hair with less curl even in just a short time!!!!

Hair has thinned due to crazy daily shedding and somehow the more conditioner I used the more dry and brittle my hair has become. I talked to my stylist about my hair loss and dryness but she said to use the leave in product for added moisture. Great. Used the product over the last 10 yrs frequently but religiously over the last 4-5 yrs. My family has requested that I wear a hair net when cooking, its emarassing. I switched to another product this month and already the amount of shedding has decreased, I am disappointed.I have pictures of the products currently on hand of the old labeling.

I received a devacurl treatment at a salon while on vacation and over the next 8 weeks suffered substantial hair loss

I have been using Diva Curl products consistently for the past several years.
My hair has been falling out by the handfuls, in the shower. Prior to 2018 my hair was thicker & looked so good. Over the past few years I switched to Diva Curl cuts & started using their products exclusively.
I use all 4. The shampoo, conditioner, gel control & crème leave in.

It just makes me sick that I did not know it was from Diva Curl products.
When I moved to Idaho, the Diva Curl girl sold me some different ones & I gradually started using them until I had all 4. But I also still had lots of Diva products. I travel a lot & used to keep them in my suitcase. We can be gone months at a time.

Yesterday I went to a different salon as the Diva Curl girl under cut my hair for the 2nd time, I had told her not too & my hair is fine & has been falling out.

At the new Panache salon I was told that Diva Curl products have a class action lawsuit for loss of hair. I was shocked. All this time trying to figure out what has been happening to my hair over the past few years.
Why did not the Diva Curl stylist not tell me about this!??

The last 3 weeks I have been home & using just the other products. Of course now I will stop using Diva Curl completely.

My hair has been so ugly & thin…falling out by the handfuls & not knowing why. Thought about cutting it off…but I don’t have enough now & that would just make me feel worse. Thought about buying extensions. But felt like I needed to get my hair to thicken up first!

The question now is what can I do to get it to be thicker ? Is this loss permanent? I had a pony tail that was so thick & now it’s Maybe a 1/2”diameter. What, if anything can I do?

I will join the class action lawsuit. My daughter is also on the same situation & lives in FL.

Please contact me with directions on what to do

I have used these products for years and my scalp is so irritated and itchy. I did not know this was the cause. My hair is dryer and falls out more. I just never Considered the cause!

I have been using strictly Deva Curl products in my hair for years. I am constantly losing hair in the shower and in general. My curls are not as bouncy and healthy. I kept using deva curl thinking it was just me I and that I needed to use it more often. I actually had my niece say to me “auntie you look like you have a lightning bolt in the back of your head” . I just now started researching because I feel like i’m balding in the back top of my head. I’m devastated seeing all these article on Deva Curl!!! I was so faithful to Deva Curl and now I truly believe it has been damaging my hair all along!!

I have used OGX and I now have thinning hair. Please add me.
