Class action claims Selsun Blue causes scalp irritation and hair loss

Toxic chemicals in the anti-dandruff shampoo Selsun Blue can actually aggravate scalp problems and even lead to hair loss, a class action lawsuit claims.

Lead plaintiff Emily Lewis accuses the shampoo maker, Sanofi-Aventis, of failing to inform consumers about toxic ingredients like selenium sulfide used in the product.

Lewis says she purchased Selsun Blue in 2020 based on marketing that it could help eliminate her dandruff and dry scalp. However, after using the product twice a week as directed, she claims her hair became brittle and began falling out. She also did not see an improvement in her dandruff.

In addition to selenium sulfide, the complaint contends that Selsun Blue products contain a preservative called DMDM Hydantoin. The plaintiff says that this ingredient can cause irritation and even release formaldehyde, which is another toxic chemical.

Further, Sanofi fails to disclose scalp irritation and hair loss as a potential side effect of using Selson Blue products, alleges the lawsuit. Lewis says that she and other consumers wouldn’t have purchased the product if they knew about the toxic ingredients.  Indeed, the complaint points to reviews on the online retailer Amazon complaining about the false advertising of Selsun Blue.

The class action lawsuit seeks to represent a nationwide class of consumers who purchased and used Selsun Blue products within the past three years, along with a subclass of Illinois residents.

This is not the first class action to be lodged over Selsun Blue. In December, a consumer filed a complaint in New York federal court claiming the manufacturer made false claims about the product being “natural.”

Used Selsun Blue for 1 year and was sick and went from 108 to finally 73 lbs over a 2 year timeframe. I am unable to bathe or wash my own hair for this past year and a caretaker comes to my home and we have used only Selsun Blue for this whole year. I have lost approximately 50% of my hair. I used this shampoo for the last time on February 20th, 2024. I am now using Johnsons Baby shampoo. I am hoping to see an end of the hair loss and regrowth of hair. I have multiple potential contributing factors, none of them new, COPD, inhaled steroids, oxygen therapy and maybe some other meds also. I say this because while I might not make a good case to present or represent your class action I am certain the shamoo caused the hair loss I experienced. I am 68 year old female.

I’ve used Selsun Blue Medicated for over a year and didn’t know until recently it was the cause of my hair loss/thinning. I now have a bald spot on the back of my head. I read the bottle and there’s absolutely nothing about causing potential hair loss!

About a year and a half ago I went to see my doctor, he told me I had sebborheic dermatitis. He recommended I try selsun blue. After about a month I had noticed thinning in my hair. But I have super curly hair so I wasn’t as concerned as I should have been. Fast forward 3 months, anytime I shower I loose huge handfuls of hair. I had bald spots on both sides of my head. About a year ago I started seeing a dermatologist, she took biopsy of my scalp and had no answers for me. I now have lost hair on both sides of my head about the size of my fist on both sides, as well as a huge patch on the back of my head (probably about the size of my hand) And small patches throughout my head. I’m only 23 years old, I was a college student before this started but the emotional trauma I have under gone from loosing my hair has resulted in me sitting at home 24/7 by myself . I have no friends, since I stopped going out and doing anything. I just want my life back. Please include me in class action. I want to share my story so no one else has to go through this.

  4. Stacy Rollins says:

My hair started falling out on clumps at the beginning of February 2023 (approximately 300 hairs every time I washed it), the same time I started using Selsun Blue. I didn’t realize there could be a correlation until I noticed my hair didn’t fall out like this while I traveled (and would use another type of shampoo). I’m so upset that this is the probable cause. It better not be permanent. I’m been so self-conscious about my thin hair this year. Add me to the class action, please.

  5. Mee-Len Dickie says:

I just used this product because I ran out of shampoo in our shower and that is what was available from my husband purchasing it. Selsun blue is burning me bad right now, I have to go rinse again, not to mention a lot of hair fell off while drying.
Please add me to this class action lawsuit
