Devacurl Hair Loss Settlement Overview:

  • Who: Consumers say DevCurl hair products caused scalp irritation, hair loss, and other damage despite claims the line was more gentle than competitors.
  • Why: A $5.2 million class action settlement has been submitted for preliminary approval, potentially leading to Class Member awards between $20 and $19,000.
  • Where: The settlement agreement covering a nationwide Class of consumers has been submitted in New York federal court.

The plaintiffs in several class action lawsuits alleging DevaCurl products caused hair loss and scalp irritation filed documents asking a New York judge to approve a proposed $5.2 million settlement featuring $20 rebates and up to $19,000 awards for Class Members Monday.

A motion for preliminary approval of the DevaCurl hair loss class action settlement stated that the deal “provides excellent relief for the Settlement Class Members.” If approved, Class Members will be able to make either or both of the following claims:

  • A $20 class action rebate for minor personal injuries suffered as a result of DevaCurl hair products
  • Up to $19,000 in reimbursements for documented injuries, emotional distress, and provable expenses for adverse reactions to DevaCurl products.

Class Members include consumers nationwide who purchased or used DevaCurl hair products in the United States between Feb 8, 2008 and thirty days after the date that the class action settlement agreement is approved.

The estimated number of Class Members is more than 665,000, according to court documents.

Claims will be able to be filed either online on the yet to be posted settlement website or by mail.

In addition to paying $5.2 million, Deva Concepts, the maker of DevaCurl products, has agreed to certain labeling changes under the terms of the settlement agreement.

“Plaintiffs have negotiated a fair, adequate, and reasonable Settlement that guarantees

Settlement Class Members significant relief,” says the motion for preliminary approval of the DevaCurl hair loss class action settlement.

Top Class Actions will continue to monitor developments in this settlement and will let viewers know when they can submit a DevaCurl hair loss claim.

DevaCurl Hair Loss Complaints Mount

Deva Concepts was hit with a rash of class action lawsuits filed by consumers claiming they paid a premium for DevaCurl hair products based on representations that the products are less harsh than other products available on the market. Instead, the plaintiffs say that they suffered shedding and hair loss due to harsh ingredients Deva Concepts hid from consumers.

The proposed $5.2 million class action settlement is not the only legal matter pending against Deva Concepts. A class action lawsuit was filed in Canada last year alleging similar DevaCurl hair loss claims.

The company also faces angry customers who have taken to social media to complain about DevaCurl hair loss including a Facebook group that reports more than 50,000 members. On Instagram, a search for #RecallDevaCurl reveals more than a thousand posts from consumers urging Deva Concepts to recall the product.

DevaCurl products are not the only hair care line  linked to scalp irritation and severe side effects. Class action lawsuits claiming side effects from Suave Professionals shampoo and conditioner, Selsun Blue anti-dandruff shampoo, and TRESemmé keratin shampoo and conditioner have all been filed by consumers in recent months.

I have been using deva curl since it came out. I have several bottles of partially used product since my hair started falling out in clumps. My once lustrous locks are thin and I am very unhappy with the lack of accountability on behalf of Deva Curl

  2. SHERRY SPIWAK says:

I have used shampoos and conditioners for few years and I was wondering why I was loosing so much hair. When I brushed my hair. I looked like I had brushes my dog I had so much in my brush. AND I HAVE LONG HAIR and it has become so dry
    So please add me

I have been using deva curl products on and off since 2014 when I first was using a “deva” trained expert in Schenectady NY as my stylist. After moving to Maine in 2015 I continued buy and using hair products from “no poo” to the hairspray. In late spring of 2015 my hair was falling out in handfuls to the point I thought I was severely sick, even though this time was the healthiest I had ever been in my life from diet to exercise to reduction in almost all medications I had been taking for years. I had never seen anything like it. In the shower handfuls would just come out in my fingers. I had even contemplated hair replacement for women. I spoke with my Dr about it as well as local pharmacist, and finally bout Rogaine for women. I stopped using deva curl products at time trying to work on finding products to regrow hair. After 9 months using many different types of shampoos, conditioners, and styling products my hair did grow back. I do happen to have photos of before deva curl use after, and then again after I stopped using deva curl. 2 years later not realizing that deva curl could be the culprit I was using random hair products and decided I would invest in my hair again to keep it healthy and beautiful, the same way I was investing in my body by getting a fitness membership to a local crosstraining/high intensity interval traing fitness center. We have personal trainers, life coaches, as well as nutritionist on staff. We receive inbody scans every six weeks to see full picture of our health. I started using deva curl products again around this time and after 4 or 5 months again my hair started falling out in record amounts. I started questioning if it was me becoming healthy. I spoke with trainers at gym as well as nutritionist. They encouraged me to take in more vitamins and calories, which I did in both protein shakes as well as organic powdered superfood and vitamin add ins to my shakes. Literally nothing helped, I thought I was going to be completely bald, I spoke with my Dr she thought maybe change of life experience as I was getting into my 40s. I had never been so discouraged, I was sent for blood work to rule out anything medically wrong that would cause hair loss and blood work came back perfect except for vit d deficiency, which is quite normal for living in the northernmost part of the United States. I thought possibly it was stress, started getting massage and trying to do meditation at home. In my busy life when I ran out of my deva curl products last January, I just picked up a product at local pharmacy to use. Last Feb my hair started growing back. Over summer I purchased deva curl on Amazon used off and on, but not on a consistent basis due to the fact I left it at my ex’s house and haven’t been back to get things. I only am finding out about this and putting the pieces together as I read a review on Amazon when I went to purchase deva curl products tonight. I am actually in shock, thank God for the woman who left the review. I would have repurchase and gone thru the crazy making cycle again. My hair has been growing back since September. I can’t believe all these yrs it has been the shampoo and conditioner that were supposed to be the best thing for my body causing such damage.

I thought deva curl was a good product I started using in 2019 noticed my hair was falling out and brittle but because of my age and meds im on didn’t think DC had anything to do with it but now with all these testimony this is the culprit please adde me

  5. BRIDGET BOYLE says:

i submitted a claim but haven’t heard anything back from anyone yet????

    1. Patrice Bell says:

Where can I submit a claim?

  6. Holly Ann LeBlanc says:

I have used DivaCurl for several years likely at least 15 + years and have had much hair loss and thinning due to this product. I did stop using it last year but the damage is done! I would like to know how to file a lawsuit or be part of the existing suit. It is unbelievable that this company put product out there that effects patrons in such a negative way. Hair loss is something NO woman or person ever wants to deal with yet here we are likely hundreds of thousands of people effected by DivaCurls gross negligence on behalf of their patrons.

  7. Paula says:

Have used Deva Curl for several years. I have severe shedding and scalp irritation. I’ll be tossing all the product in my home!
Add me to this law suit.

    1. Ann Soudant says:

2 parents with very thick hair until their deaths at 90 and 77. Have been totally puzzled and dismayed as to amount of hair loss.
I’ve already lost all hair to Chemo in the past. Seems like a cruel twist of fate. Thanks so much Deva!

    2. Henry Angelo says:

What was DEVACURL’S response to the lawsuit? Is it being taken from the market? I have the product and will be tossing it out. How do I get the $20.00 reimbursement???

  8. Gina Ruffolo says:

I have been using Deva for many years. I lose a ton of hair, my scalp is itchy, and my curls just don’t hold the same. Please add me to the list as well.

  9. Dr. J Blacher says:

Please help me with this as I have been using Deva care products since they first came out at least for 20 years. I have significant hair loss & my scalp itches all the time badly. I now know all this is from Deva curl products. I am so disappointed & angry that it took this long & this much hair loss & scalp damage to discover the culprit. Please include me in your class action suit. Please advise me asap how to join the class action suit. Thank you very much in advance. My name & e-mail are below. I have & am suffering significant damage from these products. I have invested enormous amounts of money in this product & lost too much hair to grow back the way it was

  10. Cetura Rodrigues Vieira says:

This is heartbroken. I have been using Deva Curl products for over 7 years. I have significant hair loss, my curls got thinner and dry. It changed so much and I have been looking after my diet and etc and now it makes sense. I trusted them! Please add me to this complaint.
