The hypoallergenic baby formula Neocate is often given to infants and young children with allergies that make traditional formulas dangerous for them.

Neocate baby formula is meant to provide all of the nutrients necessary for healthy development. But the formula has been increasingly linked to a number of severe side effects, including rickets, broken bones, nutritional deficiencies, and more.

Basics of Neocate Formula

Neocate is a kind of hypoallergenic baby formula manufactured by Nutricia North America and is meant to replace typical baby formula for babies who for various reasons cannot handle formulas based on milk or soy. Neocate is an elemental formula, which is broken down into amino acids. This is meant to ensure that the formula does not cause allergic reactions or other intolerance to the ingredients.

Indeed, Nutricia marks Neocate as “nutritionally complete for infants 0–12 months,” supporting “normal growth and development.

But in recent years, Neocate has been increasingly linked with serious complications based on insufficient blood phosphate. Low blood phosphate levels (or hypophosphatemia) can lead to other major complications, like low bone density, rickets, broken bones, skeletal deformities, and stunted growth.

A recent study by Yale University and the Mayo Clinic, published in the journal Bone, showed this Neocate and hypophosphatemia link. Researchers found that children using Neocate did not adequately absorb the formula’s phosphate.

According to the study, 94 percent of the 51 children taking Neocate as their primary food source developed rickets or broken bones, or demonstrated low blood phosphate levels.

Indeed, of the 51 children included in the study taking Neocate formula as their primary food course, 94 percent developed rickets or broken bones or showed low phosphate levels. Researchers noted that “most all improved with the addition of supplemental phosphate or change to a different formula.”

Side Effects of Neocate

So far, side effects that have been linked with the use of Neocate formula include the following:

  • Rickets
  • Broken Bones
  • Skeletal Deformities
  • Stunted Growth
  • Nutritional Deficiencies
  • Hypophosphatemia (low blood phosphate levels)
  • Long-term Skeletal Damage

Nutricia may have been aware of the serious complications associated with its hypoallergenic baby formula as early as 2016, yet failed to warn consumers of these risks.

Filing a Neocate Baby Formula Lawsuit

In many cases, parents of children taking Neocate may be unaware of the formula’s association with low blood phosphate levels and complications like rickets, broken bones, and more. They may be left unaware of what is causing their child to suffer from these problems.

If your child has suffered from one of these side effects after using Neocate baby formula, you may be able to join this lawsuit investigation. While filing a lawsuit cannot take away the pain and suffering of children affected by such complications, litigation can at least help to alleviate the financial burden caused by medical expenses, lost wages, and more.
