Ford has issued an urgent recall for more than 142,000 Lincoln MKC vehicles as they can spontaneously catch fire, even when not running.

The urgent safety recall was posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website May 26. It applies to 142,734 model years 2015-2019 Lincoln MKC compact SUVs.

According to the recall, the battery monitor sensor in the affected SUVs may short-circuit and overheat, causing a fire in the engine compartment while parked or driving.

“An engine compartment fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury,” the recall states.

Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete, even when the car is not running, it says.

Ford is aware of a total of 19 “potentially related” underhood fires in MKCs, most of them in North America, according to the NHTSA.

The company is unaware of any physical injuries related to the fires, it said. Ford is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Free repair offered by dealers

Dealers will add an in-line fuse to the battery monitor sensor power circuit to fix the issue, free of charge, the company said. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed June 26.

In March, Ford issued a recall on more than 1.28 million of its Fusion and MKC vehicles, model years 2013-2018, as the vehicles may have a brake fluid leak.
