According to multiple consumer reports, 2019 Acura RDX SUVs may be affected by an alleged defect that causes the vehicle to “go limp” when drivers accelerate or change lanes. While it is currently unknown what may be causing this issue, the alleged Acura defect may be dangerous and has affected several drivers.
Drivers Report Issues with 2019 Acura RDX SUVs
According to several complaints lodged with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 2019-2020 Acura RDX SUVs may be affected by a problem that causes the vehicles to experience unintended deceleration, or “limp mode”, when accelerating and changing lanes. This problem appears to generally occur while driving at high speeds or on a highway.
When vehicles go into limp mode, they may suddenly stop accelerating and not respond to the driver’s attempts to speed up. As there is no warning prior to the car going decelerating, this defect may create a dangerous situation for drivers, or risk of car accidents, for those who are changing lanes or passing other vehicles. All 2019 and 2020 Acura RDX SUVs may be affected by this defect.
One consumer who lodged a complaint with the NHTSA claims that their brand new car experienced the issue within a few days of purchase: “I just bought a new 2019 RDX Aspec last Friday, and it only has about 500 miles on it. I was driving home tonight and went about 60MPH to pass a car and my car completely lost power. I tried pressing the accelerator and I had absolutely no response.”
According to another consumer who posted online about their experience with their car going into limp mode while attempting to pass a dump truck, “As I was completing the pass, the engine lost power and the engine malfunction light began blinking. I’ve been told the vehicle went into limp mode. The car decelerated and would not go over 20 mph. I was quickly able to pull onto the shoulder to avoid being hit by the truck I just passed.”
Although some drivers have found that restarting their vehicle fixed the issue for the time being and allowed them to continue driving, other consumers have reported that they were unable to get their Acura to accelerate again after going through deceleration. As no recall has been announced by Acura, some consumers are calling for the company to recall these vehicles so that the problem may be addressed and fixed.
What To Do If Your Car Goes Into Limp Mode
If your Acura RDX SUV goes into limp mode, you may want to pull over and turn off the vehicle. According to some consumers, restarting their vehicle may temporarily fix the issue. However, some consumers may need to have their vehicle towed to a service center if the car is still unable to accelerate. Driving the vehicle while it is in limp mode may be dangerous not only for the driver, it may also cause damage to the car.
