General Motors GM Chevrolet Corvette rim defectCorvette drivers have filed a class action lawsuit against General Motors saying that their vehicles’ rims are prone to cracking, posing number of costly and dangerous problems.

The Corvette rim defect class action lawsuit was filed by Alfred Lupis. Lupis says that he purchased a new 2017 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport on Dec. 15, 2017. He says that in November 2018, when the vehicle had around 3,000 miles on it, a wheel on his car warped. In his Corvette class action, Lupis says he had to pay $115 to have it straightened.

According to the Corvette rim defect class action lawsuit, this defect has plagued many Corvette drivers, and affects 2015 to present Chevrolet Corvette Z06 vehicles and 2017 to present Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport vehicles.

The Corvette class action claims that the rim defect poses a safety concern, because cracked rims can cause tires to explode while the vehicle is being driven. This explosion can reportedly lead to a loss of control and cause a collision.

Allegedly, the problem of the defective rims is a widespread one. To support this claim, Lupis notes that in Car & Driver magazine’s long-term review of a 2017 Chevrolet Corvette GS, three of the wheels bent, and one cracked. The magazine stated that the repairs and replacements for this problem totaled $1,119, and reported that General Motors refused to cover these costs under warranty.

The Chevrolet Corvette rim defect class action lawsuit says that the defect is inherent to the vehicles and is not caused by driver error or environmental factors. Allegedly, the defect is present at the time of sale.

Lupis argues that GM knew or should have known of the rim defect, because the company conducted pre-production testing and design failure more analysis that should have revealed the defect. Additionally, Lupis says that the company was or should have been aware of the defect because significant consumer complaints were made about the problem both to dealers and to the GM customer service hotline.

Allegedly, the knowledge of the defect was “exclusively in the possession of GM and its network of dealers,” and was unavailable to consumers.

The Corvette rim problem defect class action lawsuit asserts that customers rely on representations made by the makers of a product to discern if it is a quality product. The Corvette class action lawsuit says that GM represents Corvettes as quality vehicles, but has actively concealed the existence of the defect.

Allegedly, the defect is not advertised or disclosed to consumers before or during their purchase of a Corvette, and the company continues to conceal the defect after customers have priced their vehicles. Allegedly, when customers complain of the defect, GM tells them that the wheels are not defective, but the cracked wheels are caused by driver errors, potholes, or other environmental factors.

Lupis claims that GM does not repair the defect under the warranty, causing drivers to have to pay out-of-pocket for repairs and replacements to wheels.

Lupis is represented by Kathy Jo Cook, John T. Martin, and Benjamin H. Duggan of KJC Law Firm LLC; and by Mark A. Ozzello, Tarek H. Zohdy, Cody R. Padgett, and Trisha K. Monesi of Capstone Law APC.

The Corvette Rim Defect Class Action Lawsuit is Lupis v. General Motors LLC, Case No. 1:19-cv-11582-DPW, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts.

2019 Grand Sport I bought from GM brand new. Took it in for the 12k oil change today with additional complaint of air leaking down on rear tires. The Chevrolet dealer put it up on a rack and showed me a 1 1/2 inch long crack in the R/H rear wheel. Now to be honest I do also have 2 small nails, 1 in each rear tire, but all the air loss is coming from the wheel crack. The dealer wants $2700., $ over $800 of this is for the replacement of the wheel.

Factory special order 2015 ZO6, lightly driven 10,200 miles. 3 of 4 wheels now have hairline cracks. No trouble with leaking yet but it will develop as more miles are driven according to this info. Local dealer that is servicing car is playing dumb.

I have a 2017 Watkins Glen GS number 721. Noticed a tire leak and brought it in. I was informed that BOTH rear wheels were cracked and GM is refusing to replace under warranty saying it’s a “wear” item. No, tires are a wear item. When was the last time your WHEELS wore out at 28,000 miles? I’m 76 and have never had a wheel “wear out”. Preposterous! How do I join this suit?

    2019 GS with 4K ….(4) bent wheels $3200 cost !!

2017 GS with approx 10k and 3 bent rims.

C7 GS with 44k miles with a cracked wheel. I started noticing a rear tire leak that progressively became worse. Traveling, I took the car to the GM dealer in Las Cruces, NM. They did a typical tank test, could not find a leak and pumped the tire back up. Waited an hour for a leak. All good. Woke up the next morning and it was flat. The dealer did a full submersion test and the leak was in the wheel at the bead. This was the 20″ rear wheel. I was reading the forum and notice a number of complaints about these wheels being defective, so I asked if there was a recall. No, and it was not covered because I am over the 36k bumper to bumper warranty.

The bill was going to be $900+. Because I read about the wheel potentially cracking and being warped, I opted to order in a set of C7 racing wheels that are high speed certified. Not too much more to buy four new wheels than one OEM wheel. So, we got the tires off and I was able to see the crack and that there was no road damage to the wheel. The crack was a strange vertical cleave indicating a casting problem. I quick check with a friend in the aluminum wheel business and his prognosis was a factory defect.

The reason for my post is to educate that a high-speed wobble or a leaking tire could be the wheels. I understand that there is some sort of lawsuit as well.

Name on the wheel is RONAL dated 22 June 2016

201 ZO6 with two cracked wheels. How do I become part of this lawsuit. Had to buy new wheels at $750 each with no guarantee it doesn’t happen again. Dealer said can’t do anything because of lawsuit. Want to join lawsuit. Have pictures showing crack and no other damage to wheel.

  9. Ron Lay says:

    I have a 2019 Z06 with 2100
Miles – have owned my car for about 6 months. It had a vibration while driving and went to have tires rebalanced and found two of my rims are slightly bent. Rebalancing did not cure the vibration. Not sure what my next step is after reading all these similar rom problems. I have had 22 other corvettes and never had issues with any rims. I am taking my car in the morning to dealer where I am told they will take pictures, document bent rims and then submit to GM. They said their hands are tied but for this path. I am now assuming I will be told it is not a rim problem rather mine. My dealership has been great to work with but I now fear that GM will add me to their sorry cant help you list…

  10. Gene Bramson says:

How do I become a part of the class action?
Two, 2017 Corvette Grand Sport’s and multiple cracked wheels and tire issues.
