A New Jersey man claims that his $76,918.36 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 SUV fails to start and has other problems due to defects in its electrical system and 48-volt batteries, in a class action lawsuit.

Lead plaintiff, Gerald Scattaglia, Jr., originally filed the nationwide class action lawsuit in the Superior Court of New Jersey in May. The lawsuit has since been removed to federal court and claims that Mercedes-Benz knew about the electrical and battery defects with its late-model GLE 450 SUV, but has failed to address them, forcing owners to pay for repairs.

Scattaglia says that he spent nearly $77,000 purchasing the Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 SUV in October of last year. Since then, the vehicle has spent 47 days at the dealership for repairs the plaintiff claims are due to defects in its electrical system.

The plaintiff’s Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 SUV allegedly fails to start. In addition, the plaintiff says that the dashboard malfunctions as it is rebooted and restarted due to defects in the electrical system and battery.

Scattaglia says that his Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 SUV is not the only vehicle experiencing problems. The class action lawsuit points to four technical service bulletins issued by the automaker about the vehicle’s electrical problems. Additionally, Mercedes-Benz has issued additional bulletins related to battery problems in the GLE 450 SUV, alleges the plaintiff.

The plaintiff wants to represent other New Jersey consumers who purchased a 2021 or later Mercedez-Benz GLE 450 SUV. He wants the automaker to be held financially responsible for the repairs to his and other Class Members’ vehicles, as well as the lost value they suffered due to the alleged defects.

In response to the class action lawsuit, the carmaker has pointed out that Scattaglia has not claimed that he was forced to pay for any of the repairs to his Mercedes-Benz GLE 450, reports Car Complaints

I’m a first time MB owner, I bought my 2021 GLE 450 in February of this year. It has been in the shop twice for the battery issue noted in the article. I will be selling this vehicle before my warrenty runs out, and will not be buying another MB.

  2. Elisa Root says:

Have experienced a series of issues with my GLE 450 even prior to taking delivery in July. It is in service for the 5th time. AC problems, mystery issue causing front passenger side of of dash to overheat to point of getting burned and the latest, a series of 48V battery and coolant warnings followed by a complete loss of power and steering while in the middle of a busy intersection. I am very interested in hearing more details about the suit. Please contact me.

Ditto -so frightening, easily could have resulted in collision. 2020 GLS450 has now lost power twice, both times in the middle of a busy road or freeway.

  3. Carolyn Kaiser says:

I have the same problem with my 2021 GLS 450, car died and diagnosis is the 48 v battery. No loaners available, costing me the rental.

  4. Jennifer Irwin says:

My 2021 GLE 450 died while goinf full speed on the interstate. I was nearly killed. The vehicle has less than 500 miles on it, and there was no indication of a problem until it just completely died. Incredibly dangerous.

  5. Thomas Smith says:

We traded in a glc300 coupe that had zero problems for a GLE450.that was just brought down from the truck on August 16. 2 weeks later it was towed into the shop for the battery issue. I tow truck driver that picked up the car claimed this was the 3rd one he has towed into the shop in the last few days. 2 weeks later we are being told the replacement battery will not arrive until the end of October. The dealer has been helpful getting us a loaner but by then we will have made 2 payments on a car sitting in the shop. Not worried about having to pay for the repair as it is under warranty but making payments on a car that is un useable when MB knew they had a problem is BS. On top of that the problem was never disclosed This was our 4th MB and may be the last

  6. Robert OShea says:

My 2019 CLS 450 is currently with my dealer in Pittsburgh PA with a 48V battery problem. It’s been there for the last 2 weeks.
This is what the service guys is saying.
“ We ordered a grounding cable the other day that is scheduled to arrive monday AM. We are re-sealing an elctronics unit as of right now that is located underneath the primary catalytic convertor and all of its requisite heat shields. Wont be ready til Monday – Tuesday at the earliest. There was a real problem in your 48V system.

  7. Alvin says:

Bought a new GLS 580 the end of January. In July the truck battery died and was replaced with a 48v. The dealer said that the manufacturer making the batteries “made them wrong so they now have a new manufacturer”. A month later, the battery died again and the truck was towed in. The battery is now being replaced y for a second time. What if I were driving and the truck stopped? I see many other owners with the same issue. They should not be allowed to get away with this!!

  8. Dan S says:

Had my new $74k GLE450 for two months, 4,000 miles. Same thing – would not start with no warning and battery dead. Had it towed to a local dealership, but we could not get to it for a loaner. He ordered a new battery and installed it after almost two weeks without a car. The tow truck operator said he had not seen this before, or that a battery had 0 charge left. My wife is now terrified that it will happen to her when she is in an unsafe place. Crossing our fingers that it is done.

My dealer rep has asked MB for compensation for the time we did not have the car. Still waiting.

I bought a GLE 450 on 7/18/2021. when i drove off from parking lots, we noticed the signal light did not work. we went back to dealer to show and we went back to dealer on 7/19/2021 to change the control unit.
it took 7 days to change , on 7/27/2021.
I brought car back in my garage and 2 hours later, i tried to go to market, The car did not turn on due to the malfunction of battery. Mercedes towed my car to dealer .
the dealer said they ordered 48 volts battery for replacement today,7/28/2021.
    What shall i do?

  10. Fee says:
