Business man fans himself due to broken AC

Consumers have been quite vocal about problems they’ve had with Trane HVAC systems. Despite the company’s catchphrase, “It’s Hard to Stop a Trane,” many customers say it’s even more difficult to keep one working. Defective parts or poor workmanship can contribute to a high failure rate of most any appliance.

Trane HVAC Reviews

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has lodged more than 200 complaints regarding Trane brand units.

One consumer writes that just seven months after installation, the Train A/C unit needed a new coil. Trane allegedly told the consumer that they had no proper replacement coils in stock and did not know when they would be restocked. Trane also purportedly told the consumer they would have to pay more than $600 to fix the unit, but the consumer doesn’t feel they should pay anything due to how new the unit is.

Another consumer wrote that they experienced failed evaporator coils six times in 10 years of owning two different Trane A/C units. Despite trying copper, aluminum and Trane-coated coils, the longest the coils tend to last is about 2.5 years. The consumer said Trane most recently recommended the consumer pay the full expense of taking the coils to a third party company and having a coating added to the new coils. The consumer wrote, “This is crazy! Why can’t you just make them last longer and not have to send them somewhere else to get coated?”

More reviews at the Consumer Affairs website point to cheap parts and unsatisfactory customer assistance.

One consumer wrote, “Expensive junk – deceptive customer service,” regarding a Trane split system she and her husband had installed as part of a renovation project at their home. She said the unit always “functioned erratically” and the contractor said that’s either how the unit works for that the couple wasn’t using the system correctly. In December 2018, the condenser quit after condensation completely iced over the unit.

She thought they had a three-year warranty, but found out that the product had never been registered for the warranty, and the one-year basic warranty had expired. Upon contacting Trane, the most that allegedly was offered to the couple was 15% off a new unit, which she and her husband agreed was not satisfactory.

Trane Heater and Air Conditioner Issues

One Las Vegas HVAC company actually addresses on its website why it will not promote Trane products.

Fast Affordable Air has found fault with Trane compressors that fail too quickly, a relatively new issue the Vegas HVAC servicer blames on outsourcing that has most likely resulted in poorly manufactured compressors.

The Trane heater still uses a clamshell design that consists of a variety of different metal densities, which can lead to cracking when the metallic areas heat and cool at different rates. The clamshell configuration also leads to a noisier unit, especially compared to different models that use a tubular designed heat exchanger, says Fast Affordable Air.

Trane’s alleged decisions to reduce their own warranties and to require servicers to pay for replacement parts up front have resulted in many local service companies to either greatly limit their own labor warranty on Trane units or to simply stop selling or servicing Trane heater and air conditioner units altogether.

Kevin L., an HVAC servicer, responded to the website article, saying in part, “I’ve been in the business for 44 years and have worked for Trane among others. I too can no longer recommend Trane.”

Have Any Trane Lawsuits Been Filed?

Man works on AC unitEarlier this year, Trane agreed to a class action lawsuit settlement after a number of Trane and American Standard air conditioning units failed. The affected machines were coated with an unauthorized rust inhibitor, which plaintiffs alleged caused the thermostatic expansion valve (TXV) to become gummy and stick.

To remedy the issue, Trane allegedly had service personnel add an acidic solution to the TXV instead of replacing the valve, a stop-gap measure that plaintiffs alleged could have shortened the life of the compressor.

Trane admitted no wrongdoing, but agreed to the settlement, which included reimbursement of previous repair expenses and an extended warranty for qualifying compressors. As part of the settlement, current and former owners also received the cost of labor for an authorized additive to be injected into the units that still may experience the sticky TXV.

My a/c units & thermostat are a problem. I purchased( 2) 4 ton a/c units dec. 26, 2018 for $30,000. My units are now 4 l/2 years old and I have had to change the thermostat in the upstairs unit two times. Also, I had to replace refrigerant two times for a costly sum of $4121.10, $75 & $375. The first refrigerant $375 , $75 diagnostic fee, and last refrigerant and thermostat was $4121.10 .
I bot an insurance policy that covers the compressor, air handler and thermostat in Dec. 2018 and compressor is covered for 12 years and air handler & thermostat for 10 years. My units are serviced twice a year by authorized dealer and installer.
I called the insurer Ingersold Rand and they still have not paid me for the $375 refrigerant in 2022 and just the other day 2 days ago Tues. I called again got claim numbers and went thru all the questions and they have not paid me even tho I sent by fax and letters to all Trane addresses and to Ingersol Rand insurance. TRANE IS SOMETHING I WOULD NEVER BUY AGAIN AND ADVISE EVERYONE NOT TO GET IT.

had a Trane A/C unit installed in 2016, and it remains under warranty. But, every year since installation I’ve experienced problems resulting in large bills for freon, a bad compressor installation, and now I’m told the evaporator FAN MOTOR is bad. Today I was told it is on backorder and could be up to MONTHS before it becomes available. The service man suggested replacing the unit. Not including the cost of the original unit, I’ve A WARRANTY PART REPLACEMENT ORDER IN, only to experience continued problems! I do not understand how a large manufacturer could run out of parts that are under warranty, and not make them available for up to a year. Warrantied parts, even on backorder, should not take a FEW WEEKS OR MORE to replace! This is totally unacceptable! Please include me in any class action lawsuit.

We bought a Trane in October 2020. Heater worked fine. Spring of 2021, AC kept cutting out. Nothing but problems ever since. Dozens of service calls. New capacitor, new relay switch, new compressor 3 months ago. Very loud noise when fan motor runs backwards and then shuts off It cut out again tonight. I’ve got a lemon. Complained to Trane. Got a case number. I asked for a reimbursement of $1400 labor charges to replace the compressor. They offered me $120 to shut up and go away
I refused. Then they offered me $241.80 to shut up and go away, I was bothering them. I refused. Calling lawyer tomorrow.

  3. Jon Muncrief says:

Same as others. Replaced the outside coil and capacitor. Now I need a coil for air handler in attic. It also plugs up condensation water inside air handler filling run over tray. Put system in 2017 with frequent repairs. ☹️

  4. Rebecca Veney says:

Please tell me how can I file a claim against Trane.
My air conditioning been broken since May 2023.
    First it was the TXV
    Next the compressor not working
Trane refuse to work with me
    Please help.

    1. Joyce Hamilton says:

We have had the same thing happen and the unit is 17 months old.

  6. Leroy McDuffie Jr says:

I moved in a newly built home in May 2020 and a disabled Veteran. In mid June 2020 I called the local company that installed the unit and was told the air compressor was bad which is still under warranty. The local company told me it would cost $2,000 for labor and freon. The company told me they didn’t know when they would get the part.
I called and emailed Trane and was provided a Case #/agent and was told I was Tier 3 which is supposedly priority. I told them I am myelderlyfather caregiver and I needed it fixed soonest. All I get is emails and no calls regarding updates to my case. Trane parts are made in America not China so I’m not sure what the issue is. Trane was sued previously for the same thing a few years ago. This is very unprofessional for a company that employs an estimated 29,000 people. So much for a company that touts they are an American company.

  7. Jason Y. says:

Installed a Trane HVAC about 4 years ago and it has been the most problematic HVAC systems that I have owned. Replaced the compressor, now the evaporator coil in the air handler is leaking. Installer claims that I need a $1700 UV light install to prevent the coil from failing again!

  8. Jackie Fitzgerald says:

Less than 2 years ago we paid $4,800 to have a brand new Trane heat pump installed one week after installation it stopped working service guy stated a wire had come loose they reattached the wire and left one and a half weeks later it again stopped working they then replaced the wire and ran more wiring from the unit outside into the unit inside about a month after that I noticed a huge wet spot and water leaking out of my hallway not far from where the unit was in my attic the condensation pan was filled with water and began overflowing running through my ceiling onto my carpeted hallway causing damage condensation pan was emptied and cleaned. Everything SEEMED fine AND 6 months later unit completely stopped all together service guy came out said that the unit was set to where iwhen condensation pan filled up there was an emergency shut off that would shut the system down then a serviceman would have to come out, dump it, clean it and reset it so it would begin working again fir unit to run efficiently. that’s ridiculous!! here I am it’s been less than 2 years on July the 2nd my unit began blowing hot air technician came out added Freon first then went into my hot attic and checked the unit came down and told me there was a leak in the coil and it would need replacing and parts were on backorder but said he would come out and add more freon to keep it cooling until replacement coils could be installed . Said coil would be under limited warranty but I’d be responsible for 6-7 hours of labor and approx. 10 lbs of freon at $75 per lb .This unit is less than 2 years old …I paid $4800 )ess than two years ago for this brand new Trane to be put in. Today is July 11th no one from the company that put my heat pump in has been back to do anything . The replacement coil has still not come in . Today I spoke with the technician from the Heating and Air Company that installed my unit n Madison Heights Virginia who told me that right about the time we had our brand new trane installed that the company realized they had put defective coils in the trane heat pumps and they then replace them in all of them. So here I am in the gaps evidently and got one of the “brand new” old units before the defective coil was replaced. now less than 2 years later the guy tells me since my warranties run out that I will be responsible for 6 or 7 hours of labor to replace the coil and also Freon at $75 a pound for 10 pounds of freon my unit is only 2 years old I’m mad $4,800 and 2 years old six or seven visits by technicians beginning one week after installation. Someone needs to do something enough is enough!!!

    1. Eric says:

Hi, I live in Lynchburg va, and had a brand new trane spilt unit installed last year in February(heat pump and air handler) It was done by Maddox heating and air, I called them they told me the labor was out of warranty and that I would have to pay $65 diagnostic as well as labor. I’m still making payments on this whole setup. I literally had a new born yesterday, that will be coming home tomorrow. My unit stopped on Thursday last week. The fan will not come on nor will the ac. I cannot afford to have additional expenses at the moment. Did you have any luck?

  9. William Temple says:

Home and the Trane HVAC is only 6 years old. The evaporator coil in the air handler is leaking. Bid to fix is $4,000. Sign me up for any Class Action against Trane.

  10. Lucy House Hamilton says:

Had new Trane unit installed in March 2020. Started making noise 2 years later. Had new compressor installed March 27,2023. Parts covered but costed me $404 for labor. Reached out to Trane and they offered me 121.00 reimbursement. I am not happy and would love to be a part of any class action lawsuit
