Business man fans himself due to broken AC

Consumers have been quite vocal about problems they’ve had with Trane HVAC systems. Despite the company’s catchphrase, “It’s Hard to Stop a Trane,” many customers say it’s even more difficult to keep one working. Defective parts or poor workmanship can contribute to a high failure rate of most any appliance.

Trane HVAC Reviews

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has lodged more than 200 complaints regarding Trane brand units.

One consumer writes that just seven months after installation, the Train A/C unit needed a new coil. Trane allegedly told the consumer that they had no proper replacement coils in stock and did not know when they would be restocked. Trane also purportedly told the consumer they would have to pay more than $600 to fix the unit, but the consumer doesn’t feel they should pay anything due to how new the unit is.

Another consumer wrote that they experienced failed evaporator coils six times in 10 years of owning two different Trane A/C units. Despite trying copper, aluminum and Trane-coated coils, the longest the coils tend to last is about 2.5 years. The consumer said Trane most recently recommended the consumer pay the full expense of taking the coils to a third party company and having a coating added to the new coils. The consumer wrote, “This is crazy! Why can’t you just make them last longer and not have to send them somewhere else to get coated?”

More reviews at the Consumer Affairs website point to cheap parts and unsatisfactory customer assistance.

One consumer wrote, “Expensive junk – deceptive customer service,” regarding a Trane split system she and her husband had installed as part of a renovation project at their home. She said the unit always “functioned erratically” and the contractor said that’s either how the unit works for that the couple wasn’t using the system correctly. In December 2018, the condenser quit after condensation completely iced over the unit.

She thought they had a three-year warranty, but found out that the product had never been registered for the warranty, and the one-year basic warranty had expired. Upon contacting Trane, the most that allegedly was offered to the couple was 15% off a new unit, which she and her husband agreed was not satisfactory.

Trane Heater and Air Conditioner Issues

One Las Vegas HVAC company actually addresses on its website why it will not promote Trane products.

Fast Affordable Air has found fault with Trane compressors that fail too quickly, a relatively new issue the Vegas HVAC servicer blames on outsourcing that has most likely resulted in poorly manufactured compressors.

The Trane heater still uses a clamshell design that consists of a variety of different metal densities, which can lead to cracking when the metallic areas heat and cool at different rates. The clamshell configuration also leads to a noisier unit, especially compared to different models that use a tubular designed heat exchanger, says Fast Affordable Air.

Trane’s alleged decisions to reduce their own warranties and to require servicers to pay for replacement parts up front have resulted in many local service companies to either greatly limit their own labor warranty on Trane units or to simply stop selling or servicing Trane heater and air conditioner units altogether.

Kevin L., an HVAC servicer, responded to the website article, saying in part, “I’ve been in the business for 44 years and have worked for Trane among others. I too can no longer recommend Trane.”

Have Any Trane Lawsuits Been Filed?

Man works on AC unitEarlier this year, Trane agreed to a class action lawsuit settlement after a number of Trane and American Standard air conditioning units failed. The affected machines were coated with an unauthorized rust inhibitor, which plaintiffs alleged caused the thermostatic expansion valve (TXV) to become gummy and stick.

To remedy the issue, Trane allegedly had service personnel add an acidic solution to the TXV instead of replacing the valve, a stop-gap measure that plaintiffs alleged could have shortened the life of the compressor.

Trane admitted no wrongdoing, but agreed to the settlement, which included reimbursement of previous repair expenses and an extended warranty for qualifying compressors. As part of the settlement, current and former owners also received the cost of labor for an authorized additive to be injected into the units that still may experience the sticky TXV.

Same issues as others. Unit mfg. 10/2019. As of now not working properly for over 3 months. Would like advice on legal recourse.

  2. Tyrone Loukas says:

Trane central air conditioners are generally well-reviewed for their reliability and performance, but their higher price point may not be feasible for all budgets.

Within a few weeks of turning 10 years old (thus, beyond the warranty), our Trane 2-ton AC/heat pumps failed. It had no major problems before that, but we expected a well-maintained unit to last at least 13 years. After replacing 5 parts over 6 visits didn’t fix it (at least I didn’t have to pay for some of that), my service company gave up and said to call Trane directly (and gave me the phone number). I contacted them (Customer Relations), and the rep took down the whole story, entering it in the computer. Then I got an email asking for copies of all of the work orders (service and maintenance) and the same details all over again. Then heard nothing. I kept sending email queries (over 2 months), got auto-replies about how they were working on it. Finally got this reply: “Thank you for contacting Trane Consumer Relations. We apologize; Consumer Relations is not a technical support department for residential or commercial equipment. We rely on our dealers to provide consumers with technical assistance, and assist with any concerns they have pertaining to their equipment. We are not HVAC licensed technicians here and, therefore, are not able to provide any technical advice. The Trane dealer servicing your equipment has access to local technical support, and would be better equip to assist in this situation.” Needless to say I was furious and told them so. We will never buy a Trane product again because clearly they do not care to support their customers or products. Guess I can’t complain too much because we got 10 years out of it. I will inform Consumer Reports that they may need to qualify their survey results, because those results indicate that Trane has the highest reliability.

Trane HVAC reviews have reported product defects, including issues with refrigerant leaks, faulty compressors, and ineffective cooling, leading to the need for repairs and early system replacements.

  5. Keiko Wagner says:

We built a new house 2018, we had to replace our fourth evaporator coil. Trane wants to offer $300…..Please add us to the class action suit too.

  6. Tyrone Loukas says:

For some years, technological innovations have been happening at exponential pace. If you are using a decade old heating and cooling system, there are strong chances that you are not reaping the full benefits of progression in HVAC technology

  7. Tyrone Loukas says:

HVAC maintenance runs are often best performed after a season ends and right before the next season starts

  8. Tyrone Loukas says:

The truth is, your air conditioner requires regular care to maintain its performance.

Please add me to your list of complaints. Bought the unit in April 2019. Since then I’ve had to have 3 repairs requiring new parts which were cover under warranty but not the labor. Now I’m finding out the coils need to be repaired at $1000 labor and $460 Freon!!! How can I participate in the class action suit bi live in Florida.

    HELP!
My unit went out in August 8th. I contacted Trane and they sent me a number for a guy named Jimmy (a trained Trane technician) who worked at Quik Refrigeration. When I called, they did not send Jimmy; but someone else who had to be on the phon because he was not familiar with the system.

When it came time for the diagnosis, the gentleman could not tell me what was wrong, he just said my compressor wasn’t working. I knew this already as it was clear from looking at the outside unit. I asked why and he could not provide an answer, but handed me a receipt. I refused to pay because I knew he wasn’t “Jimmy” and could tell he was not knowledgeable. The next day, I called Quik Refrigeration and complained to him and he said that for my trouble he would not charge me.

Aggravated with the services, I called Trane and the lady I spoke with gave me another trained technician number from Arizona Valley Refrigeration. They sent a guy name Robert who seemed more knowledgeable and was able to tell me exactly what went wrong. I had a LO current emergency code that led to a faulty trip of my compressor. This was due to a bad storm that had just came through. In fact, Robert told me that the storm we had also knocked a whole bunch of Trane HVACs units at the Casino offline.

He charged me for my services, told me I needed a new compressor, but that it was on back order until December. When I asked what I should do until then with temperatures being in the 120s, he told me I had to wait for the part that was under warranty or get a whole new system.

This sounded incorrect to me. The part was under warranty, I live in the hottest city in Arizona… surely Trane would be able to compensate me with some help. I called them and a gentleman told me all they could do is escalate a claim to get the part (that was on back order and no where in the U.S.) expedited to me. That I was on my own for the summer months and kick rocks. I called my insurance company and started a claim process as well.

I bought as many swamp coolers as I could, buckled down and endured the heat despite much discomfort, working shift work over the night in the military and trying my best to sleep during the day in a very hot home. It was miserable, but eventually winter came.

When December rolled around I called Arizona Valley, and they told me the part finally came, it was under warranty but I would have to pay $1200 for installation. I was floored. After enduring a hot summer, not being compensated and told to suck it up by Trane, I do not feel I should have to pay a dime.

I called Trane and a lady worker told me they never escalated my claim and that Robert from Arizona Valley was actually not a Trane technician. I resubmitted my claim, this time with paperwork and I still have not heard back from Trane.

I am in the military and will be moving out of my home to rent it out in March. I have dealt with so much and feel Trane was negligent in ensuring they had sufficient and properly trained representation where I live; and, they also showed little to no concern for me. I can only imagine if I had a young infant and thank God my dog didn’t die.

I deserve to be fairly compensated for my troubles and ill treatment.
