Business man fans himself due to broken AC

Consumers have been quite vocal about problems they’ve had with Trane HVAC systems. Despite the company’s catchphrase, “It’s Hard to Stop a Trane,” many customers say it’s even more difficult to keep one working. Defective parts or poor workmanship can contribute to a high failure rate of most any appliance.

Trane HVAC Reviews

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has lodged more than 200 complaints regarding Trane brand units.

One consumer writes that just seven months after installation, the Train A/C unit needed a new coil. Trane allegedly told the consumer that they had no proper replacement coils in stock and did not know when they would be restocked. Trane also purportedly told the consumer they would have to pay more than $600 to fix the unit, but the consumer doesn’t feel they should pay anything due to how new the unit is.

Another consumer wrote that they experienced failed evaporator coils six times in 10 years of owning two different Trane A/C units. Despite trying copper, aluminum and Trane-coated coils, the longest the coils tend to last is about 2.5 years. The consumer said Trane most recently recommended the consumer pay the full expense of taking the coils to a third party company and having a coating added to the new coils. The consumer wrote, “This is crazy! Why can’t you just make them last longer and not have to send them somewhere else to get coated?”

More reviews at the Consumer Affairs website point to cheap parts and unsatisfactory customer assistance.

One consumer wrote, “Expensive junk – deceptive customer service,” regarding a Trane split system she and her husband had installed as part of a renovation project at their home. She said the unit always “functioned erratically” and the contractor said that’s either how the unit works for that the couple wasn’t using the system correctly. In December 2018, the condenser quit after condensation completely iced over the unit.

She thought they had a three-year warranty, but found out that the product had never been registered for the warranty, and the one-year basic warranty had expired. Upon contacting Trane, the most that allegedly was offered to the couple was 15% off a new unit, which she and her husband agreed was not satisfactory.

Trane Heater and Air Conditioner Issues

One Las Vegas HVAC company actually addresses on its website why it will not promote Trane products.

Fast Affordable Air has found fault with Trane compressors that fail too quickly, a relatively new issue the Vegas HVAC servicer blames on outsourcing that has most likely resulted in poorly manufactured compressors.

The Trane heater still uses a clamshell design that consists of a variety of different metal densities, which can lead to cracking when the metallic areas heat and cool at different rates. The clamshell configuration also leads to a noisier unit, especially compared to different models that use a tubular designed heat exchanger, says Fast Affordable Air.

Trane’s alleged decisions to reduce their own warranties and to require servicers to pay for replacement parts up front have resulted in many local service companies to either greatly limit their own labor warranty on Trane units or to simply stop selling or servicing Trane heater and air conditioner units altogether.

Kevin L., an HVAC servicer, responded to the website article, saying in part, “I’ve been in the business for 44 years and have worked for Trane among others. I too can no longer recommend Trane.”

Have Any Trane Lawsuits Been Filed?

Man works on AC unitEarlier this year, Trane agreed to a class action lawsuit settlement after a number of Trane and American Standard air conditioning units failed. The affected machines were coated with an unauthorized rust inhibitor, which plaintiffs alleged caused the thermostatic expansion valve (TXV) to become gummy and stick.

To remedy the issue, Trane allegedly had service personnel add an acidic solution to the TXV instead of replacing the valve, a stop-gap measure that plaintiffs alleged could have shortened the life of the compressor.

Trane admitted no wrongdoing, but agreed to the settlement, which included reimbursement of previous repair expenses and an extended warranty for qualifying compressors. As part of the settlement, current and former owners also received the cost of labor for an authorized additive to be injected into the units that still may experience the sticky TXV.

What Can I Do If I Have Purchased a Trane?

If you live in California and have purchased a Trane HVAC system in the past several months, you could benefit from speaking with an experienced attorney. Trane currently is a company under investigation for possible consumer rights violations committed in the state of California.

The contractor in Asheville NC installed a dual fuel heat pump model 4twr404261000ac condenser repeated condensor shut off warnings. repeated service calls, no resolution add me to any relevant suits

  2. Diane Bornstein says:

I purchased a Trane in 2013. I had to replace the compressor in 2015 due to a manufacturing mal function. The service man told me it would be 2,500.00 I called the manager of the place of purchase he told me the service tech quoted me the wrong price it was still under warranty. I payed around 800.00 for labor. Yesterday I had another company look at my unit b/c the company I bought rom said it need about 900.00 of free on. The new company said it didn’t need free on. The compressor was malfunctioning and I did not have a 10 year warranty. I am beyond frustrated with this Trane. It’s only 9 years old and I paid over 7,000.00 for it in 2013. I would like to be part of the class action law suit.

    1. Jalissa Harkins says:

I also had the same issue in August of 2022. I am looking for a lawyer to see if there is a large enough group of people effected to do a class act.

  3. Jennifer says:

Wow we purchased to systems in 12/19 and every winter the downstairs unit doesn’t work. The board was replaced 02/22 and now we have been without heat downstairs since 11/22 because it is going to cost another 1200 to replace the board and motor!! Please add us to any lawsuit suing Trane for selling faulty parts!!

  4. David Christie says:

Was sold a Trane heat pump around 5-6 years ago. Here’s my good deed for the day: Run – Don’t walk – Run in the other direction if they try to sell you one of these Trane wrecks. The second year I had this crap unit, the compressor needed to be replaced. I’m not making this up. The service guys might as well set up a cot in the garage. I think I’ve actually spent as much money on the constant service calls to keep this piece of junk running than it cost. Just like clockwork – you can depend on a Trane – to break down regularly. I’m done. No more service calls to the clowns I bougt it from. What a business. Sell people Trane crap. Then cash in on parts, coolant, constant service calls. You’ve been warned.

  5. Laura G says:

Purchased a Train Heat Pump and Air Handler in June of 2017. The indoor coil is leaking Freon. Have a quote that is will cost me in excess of $5,000 to repair the coil (parts, labor, drain/replace Freon etc). In addition, I have to run the furnace on emergency heat until the replacement coil if available. My dealer, Martel HVAC, never registered the unit at the time of installation and the limited warranty expired on Nov 6, 2012 just a few weeks before the furnace stopped producing heat. I am beyond frustrated to learn that this is a known issue with Trane. I will file a complaint with them but am interested in participating in any class action suits that are brought against Trane for defective coil.

  6. Rania Condra says:

I also have purchased a 4 ton Trane unit in July of 2020- November of 2022, I noticed the heat was running nonstop – contacted the company I purchased from and guy came out, inspected and said it is leaking Freon- the owner of the company stated that he has been seeing this in the past year with Trane units and mentioned that every so many you see a defective one ….. they charged me to come out, put Freon in the unit and a dye to track where the leak is- I told them I should no have to pay for labor on something that was defective when it was made and then sold to me- I had no choice but to pay and they gave me a number to the Trane rep here in Chattanooga, TN. And he pretty much told me oh well and to call a 1800 number to their complaint dept and start a case…. I am beyond upset- the company is throwing it off on TRANE and the TRANE rep is throwing it off on the heat/air company- he even mentioned that they could have brought a perfectly fine system and damaged it somehow during installation- please reach out to me and I would like to be included in any group legal action, since I don’t seem to be getting anywhere with these people.

  7. Jeanette Reynolds says:

I had a 16 seer American standard heat pump installed Nov. 5 2018. Just found out coil is leaking and needs replacing which is going to cost me over $1000 for labor to repair it.

    1. Jeanette Reynolds says:

I just had the coil replaced today Nov. 21 2022. At a total cost of $1470
I feel they knew these coils were defective and should be held responsible for the labor cost. I live in Texas. I understand there was a class action lawsuit nationwide. But not many people were informed of this
      .

      1. sherry starling says:

How do I find out about the class action lawsuit?

        1. Deborah L THOMPSON says:

We had a new home built in 2020 and moved in 2021. The fan motor would not shut off. The service technician replaced a valve and replaced leaking freon. We paid 709 dollars for that service call. Three weeks later experienced the same problem. Now we have to replace the coil which will cost a minimum of 700 dollars more. Does anyone know if the installation contractor, whom is also serving the unit have any responsibility for installing a defective unit. According to the info published on the class action suite, there a list of HVAC pump models associated with the defective units. Does anyone know how to access this? It is of interest whether the installation contract was sent any notification concerning this matter before it was installed. We are interested in joining any other class action suite.

  8. Gerald Wheeler says:

I live in Virginia but hope we can be added to the class action suit. We had a Trane tam3 air handler and 3 ton hwatpump installed in 2019. That’s what was recommended by the owner of the company. We have had nothing but trouble out of this unit. Had to replace a valve in the heatpump and also had freon loud. Fan on the air handler is extremely loud. They have slowed it down but it’s still too loud. Had to replace a burner in it and now the coil has had to be replaced. Took a week to get a coil, so we had to use emergency heat during that time. With so many complaints about the systems, I think the entire unit should be replaced. Been a proud Trane customer for over 30 years. But no more Trane for me.

  9. Bill Reynolds says:

Please add me to your growing list of dissatisfied, disgruntled Trane customers. I too filed a clam (191043) with Trane over loss of refrigerant from a factory defective aluminum inside coil. Model 4TXC009DS3HCCA looking for financial assistance with this endeavor. The entire unit was installed 11/12/2019. Like so many others on your list sitting in the North Carolina heat waiting on a new coil and a very expensive repair bill. See my clam and Trane’s reply below.

    Thermostat Model TCONT724AS42DA, S/N 1935R3ADCX, Term end date 11/01/2024 5 years

Completed in service date 11/12/2019, Installed by Ted’s HVAC, LLC, PO Box 3464, 710 South Foushee Street, Roxboro, N C 27573,
Ted’s HVAC made a service call on our unit the evening of 09/06/2022. Diagnostic was performed by a technician. He identified a leak in the indoor coil and would require a replacement under warranty. The cost to do this replacement would be $3085.77. As you can understand I will not be using Ted’s as I can’t even seem to be able to talk to the owner and sales person that sold us the unit. This was for labor and materials such as nitrogen, liquid line filter drier, refrigerant. I have refused to pay $106.74 wondering why all warranty including labor and parts was not the responsibility of the manufacture.ie:Trane..( no copy of service request was left with me or received in the mail.as of today 11-21-2022.
I have done a little investigation and have discovered that the above mentioned problem is a known problem at a very high rate so noted in the Better Business Bureau as well as possible class action lawsuits.
Another problem we are having is that nobody has a replacement coil and a possible delivery date of 4 to 5 weeks. I also have real concerns if the coil is replaced that it will not do the same exact thing in yet another very short timeline. I replaced a good working 22 year old furnace and air conditioner system as I was worried of having problems as I am now with a unit only 2.86 years old and gently used maybe 11 total months as we live in the South.
Ater giving you the complete run down and history I am looking for financial help with a complete new system as I do have trust issues with Trane as your advertising logo nothing run like a Trane is a very true statement as it does not run or I should say run properly. The ball is now is your court please and I can be reached at one of the following below.
