woman using Sharp microwave oven drawerA class action lawsuit claims that microwave drawers made by Sharp Electronics possess a defect that makes them unreasonably dangerous, because they can catch fire.

Plaintiff Thomas Macone says he upgraded his kitchen in the fall of 2017, during which time he purchased a Sharp-branded 1000 Watt Microwave Oven Drawer model Number KB6524PSY. He says that he paid more than $900 for it.

Allegedly, he chose the microwave based on its drawer feature, as well as based on Sharps’ trustworthy name and the advertisements that showed the microwaves as being of high quality.

Allegedly, because of the brand name and the price of the microwave, Macone believed that the microwave would have a warranty longer than a year, and believed that Sharp would repair or replace the microwave if it failed.

However, the microwave reportedly began making a buzzing sound and emitted a burning/smoking smell on or around February 2019.

Macone says that this occurred after he had cleaned and used the microwave as intended. He says that he only used the microwave 25 more times after the initial problem, at which point the microwave failed.

The Sharp microwave drawer class action lawsuit claims that Macone notified Sharp of the problem, and he had it inspected in accordance with Sharp’s recommendations. Allegedly, he paid $89 for the inspections, and the technician said that he had seen many similar cases to Macone’s.

The Sharp class action lawsuit says that Sharp then did not continue to investigate the problem, and informed Macone that his microwave was out of warranty. Allegedly, Sharp informed Macone that the microwave replacement would cost $325. According to Macone, this represented a breach of express warranty.

The microwave drawer class action lawsuit says Sharp misrepresented the nature of the problem to Macone, because Sharp told him that there was not a wider problem with the microwave.

Allegedly, Macone specifically asked if there was a widespread defect with the microwaves, and Sharp said that there was not.

However, when Macone accepted a replacement microwave, he allegedly received a message that said “in consideration of this Information, you relieve Sharp Electronics Corporation from any other claim or controversy whatsoever arising out of an alleged malfunction [of the microwave.]” He says that he was not sufficiently told that he was signing a legal document for which he may want to seek counsel.

The microwave drawer defect class action lawsuit claims that the release of legal rights was obtained fraudulently and based on misrepresentations and omissions, and is therefore null and void.

Macone says that he and many other consumers were injured by the allegedly defective microwaves and by Sharp’s misrepresentations.

my microwave in Sharp model number KB6524ps. It will buz for a while and let stop and it will happen again. That has never happened in my many years of using a microwave. Today my neighbor with the same model drawer caught on fire. I am now afraid to use mine. At my senior age, I could no deal with a fire. I want to be added to the class-action lawsuit.

I have a Sharp SMD2480CS microwave drawer with an April 2018 mfg date. Did a complete kitchen remodel and place an order in Nov 2019 with an installed date of end of Mar 2019. Keypad second row of numbers not functioning and Sharp won’t cover repairs due to mfg date and purchase date. Also the Microwave did have several occasions of smoke and burnt wire smell, but nothing in the last several months. Add me to the list

I have the exact same problem. they are saying purchase date, not install date. Same mechanical/electrical issue

  3. Lashandra Hubbard says:

I kept mine unplugged because of the humming. got rid of it.

  4. Sara says:

Moved into our house in October and we have one of these models. We notice it seems to draw a ton of power from other sources and makes an odd buzzing noise in the beginning. It also takes down our internet connection/wifi almost guaranteed everytime its used, despite efforts to combat it. Now learning this. Guess I’ll contact sharp next?

  7. M.Moore says:

I don’t think they understand what goes into installing this microwave. I have two of them with one almost catching my kitchen on fire. The second one starting making mess up sounds. They are very expensive and then they offer 200 for replacement. Now my beautiful kitchen has a a useless machine in its place.

  8. Pete G says:

Add me as well. Ours started smoking badly after less than 3 years. Since the cabinet is cut to size, and we have no good place to put a countertop microwave we are replacing it with another though with an extended warranty.

  9. Marlo Moore says:

Omg….Sharp did me the same way
Just did my kitchen and the microwave starts buzzing and popping. Had a cabinet built just for the microwave. I STILL HAVE THE MICROWAVE. Just couldn’t throw it away. Im so heart broken.
