A man mowing a lawn.Numerous consumers have become concerned over Roundup related cancer, after it was recently announced the popular weedkiller’s main ingredient could be carcinogenic. This concern has already spurred litigation from the general public, with one of the most recent lawsuits alleging Roundup related cancer filed by a man from Tennessee.

Plaintiff David C. alleges manufacturer Monsanto Company had failed to warn him and other customers against the potentially fatal side effects linked to their weedkiller.

According to the lawsuit, David had used the weedkiller on a regular basis beginning in 2014 and was not advised he needed any protective equipment against potentially toxic fumes.

David says this means he had been exposing himself to carcinogenic ingredients for years, which he alleges ultimately caused him to develop Roundup related cancer. More specifically, David was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after inhaling allegedly toxic fumes that were produced from spraying the weedkiller.

David opted to file legal action after discovering Roundup’s main ingredient, glyphosate, was potentially carcinogenic and was linked to an increased risk of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and other cancers in several studies.

Overview Roundup Cancer Correlation

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) recently released a report in March 2015, which described the carcinogenic nature of glyphosate and also stated that four other pesticides were linked to an increased risk of cancer.

The report was released after three studies from different companies had each indicated glyphosate carried an increased risk of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma:

  • A Canadian study published in November 2001 by the American Association for Cancer Research, found men exposed to glyphosate had been developing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in ten years after exposure.
  • A United States study published in the Occupational and Environmental Medicine journal had concluded that glyphosate and other pesticides were “potentially carcinogenic” and were “associated with increased NHL [non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma] incidence.”
  • A Swedish study published in the International Journal of Cancer in October 2008 had found the likelihood of non Hodgkin’s lymphoma would double in less than ten years after glyphosate exposure.

Researchers had begun investigating the correlation between glyphosate and cancer, after it was noted that a number of farmers had been diagnosed with non Hodgkin’s lymphoma, with the Environmental Protection Agency suspecting a link in the 1980s.

Glyphosate is a selective herbicide, which works by targeting plant life that produces the 5-enolpyruvylshikimic acid-3-phosphate (EPSP) synthase enzyme. This allows the product to kill unwanted plant life, which maximizes the nutrient distribution for crops.

Approximately 250 million pounds of glyphosate of sprayed on crops per year ranging from commercial nurseries to suburban lawns.

Roundup is one of the most popular weedkillers in the United States, and has been on the market since the 1970s. This means that Monsanto has been marketing Roundup for decades while being allegedly aware of glyphosate’s carcinogenic nature.

Furthermore, the Roundup cancer lawsuit alleges the company has been aware that glyphosate was linked to an increased risk of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma since the mid-1980s and has allegedly failed to warn consumers of this information.

David alleges his injuries were directly caused by the Roundup weedkiller, leaving him with serious damages including medical expenses, as well as emotional and mental anguish.

This Roundup Lawsuit is Case No. 3:19-cv-00084, in the U.S. District Court of Middle Tennessee, Nashville Division.
