Roundup ingredients have been in the public spotlight after reports revealed evidence that the weedkiller’s main ingredient, glyphosate, is carcinogenic–meaning that Roundup exposure could potentially cause cancer in those exposed to the product.
Unfortunately, the weedkiller has been used in gardens, farms, and suburban lawns for decades. According to recent litigation, consumers were not warned about the link between Roundup ingredients and cancer.
The alleged failure of the manufacturer to warn the public about Roundup ingredients has spurred legal action with consumers alleging Monsanto Company knew that glyphosate was carcinogenic for years.
One of the most recent Roundup lawsuits was filed by a woman from Arizona, who alleges her husband died due to regular exposure to Roundup ingredients. This lawsuit and others like it allege that Monsanto concealed vital product safety information about Roundup and cancer, putting consumers in danger.
Plaintiff Elizabeth D. filed her Roundup lawsuit soon after her husband Austin D. died of Burkitt’s Lymphoma on Sept. 29, 2017. Elizabeth alleges that her husband’s cancer was caused by glyphosate exposure. According to the Roundup lawsuit, Austin had used Roundup on a regular basis between 2014 to 2016.
The lawsuit alleges that there had been no mention of potential development of cancer from Roundup exposure by Monsanto. Elizabeth says she opted to file legal action after discovering other patients had developed cancer after using Roundup ingredients and learned that the product has been linked to over a dozen different cancers.
Overview of Roundup Cancer Correlation
Roundup is one of the most popular weedkillers in the United States and is used throughout the world, with customers ranging from commercial nurseries to the personal lawns of homeowners.
It has been on the market for over 40 years, and has become known as a reliable weedkiller. The main ingredient of Roundup is glyphosate, which is a selective herbicide the targets specific plant life that produces certain enzymes.
While this makes for an effective weedkiller, glyphosate has been linked to a significantly increased risk of cancer. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) released a report describing the risks in March 2015. The report concluded that exposure to glyphosate and four other pesticides increase the risk of cancer.
It is important to note that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had begun to suspect a correlation in the 1980s, but the IARC report made the association public. The IARC released this report soon after reviewing the results of three studies from the United States, Canada, and Sweden:
- Canada Study: Published in November 2001 by the American Association for Cancer Research, this study found that subjects developed non Hodgkin’s lymphoma after being exposed to Roundup ingredients for under 10 years.
- United States Study: Published in the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine, researchers found that glyphosate and certain other pesticides were “potentially carcinogenic” and linked to an increased risk of non Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
- Sweden Study: Published in the International Journal of Cancer in October 2008, the study found that the risk of non Hodgkin’s lymphoma doubled after less than 10 years of exposure to glyphosate.
Elizabeth alleges that her husband would not have used the weedkiller if he had known that Roundup ingredients increased his risk of developing cancer. Elizabeth is seeking a number of damages against Monsanto for counts of negligence and wrongful death.
This Roundup Lawsuit is Case No. 2:18-cv-03902-DJH, in the U.S. District Court of Arizona.
