Whirlpool agreed to pay $21 million to resolve claims its dishwashers are prone to leaks.

Whirlpool manufactures several types of home appliances, including dishwashers.
In 2020, Whirlpool consumers filed a class action lawsuit against the company alleging the dishwashers are prone to leaks. According to the plaintiffs, the dishwashers leak due to faulty seals within the appliances.
“The dishwashers were and are equipped with a pump motor diverter shaft seal … oriented incorrectly, accelerating degradation of the seal and creating a buildup of debris that prevents the shaft seal spring from properly sealing the diverter shaft and sump,” the Whirlpool class action lawsuit says.
Whirlpool allegedly knew about this defect but failed to inform consumers or remedy the issue.
As a result, consumers such as the plaintiffs suffered from leaks and property damage, the class action contends. Plaintiffs say they had to pay out of pocket for repairs as a result of leaking dishwashers.
Whirlpool hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to settle the claims against it with a $21 million settlement.
Under the terms of the settlement, Class Members can receive cash payments of up to $225 in reimbursement for out of pocket repair expenses. These payments specifically reimburse customers for replacement or repairs of a dishwasher’s diverter motor or sump pump due to a diverter seal leak.
The deadline for exclusion and objection is March 17, 2022.
The Whirlpool dishwasher leak class action lawsuit settlement final approval hearing is scheduled for May 26, 2022.

20 thoughts onWhirlpool dishwasher leak $21M class action lawsuit settlement
HI, We bought a Whirlpool dishwasher in 2013, we had a diverter repair in 2016, and I still have the receipts from the plumber and appliance repair ($254). It began leaking again last fall into the basement, so we opted to replace it. I no longer have the owners manual, model or serial number because I cleaned out my files a few months ago. Do I have any recourse? What do you recommend?

I bought a Whirlpool dishwasher in 2010.
Our Whirlpool dishwasher hasn’t leaked (yet) but the cheap plastic roller assembly broke apart, causing the entire upper rack to fall down onto the lower rack. It took two weeks to find the correct replacement parts online and fix it ourselves using YouTube videos. It cost us about $100 for parts and broken glassware (not counting time and aggravation). The replacement parts are now made of metal so Whirlpool obviously knows there was a problem.
Please add me. I purchased a house in 2010 and bought both a Whirlpool refrigerator and stove in 2011 at Lowe’s.

Hi have a whirlpool dishwasher bought in 2013 from HHG, which is now closed. I noticed water always coming from under the dishwasher when I would run it and water sitting on floor base on bottom of cabinets on both sides and tile with every wash. I called service about the leak, I was told the parts to fix that plus labor would be no less than $300.00 and would not be worth it. It was not under manufacture warranty anymore. The dishwasher now sits unused which is ridiculous. The leakage damage is done mold is visible and I can’t imagine what it looks like under the dishwasher???! I called whirlpool customer service to see about this class action e-mail I received and they told me everything other than the truth. They said on the service call it was noted it was the motor and I opted out to fix it. While speaking to the representative my question was it states the motor went why is it I can run it now today 3/18/22 through the whole cycle. Bad thing is the water leakage is a mess and I don’t want to create more damage. They don’t give receipts they have you sign your signature on a phone. I had a problem with my stove which is Whirlpool and the service tech who fixed the stove took a look at the dishwasher for me and said as well it’s leaking from underneath and would be a costly to fix !!!! My point with the customer service is if it was a motor that’s just as bad if after a couple of years that would go out ? No sense at all !

Our Whirlpool dishwasher leaked. The water under the center island caused extensive damage. The whole island had to be replaced because of the mold that was growing. Of course, I did not keep the serial number or model of the whirlpool installed in 2011 by the builder. I did not replace the Whirlpool with another Whirlpool, that would be crazy. Do I have receipts of replacement and an island rebuild? Yes, Do I have the old piece of junk Whirlpool dishwasher? NO! So the company gets by with developing, selling, and not being held responsible for mine.
I feel this so much!!! I purchased a house with a brand new whirlpool dishwasher and it lasted about 7 months, the realtor left me every piece of paperwork for everything else in my home except …. The dishwasher!! I didn’t have the info to even use the warranty. So yeah it got trashed and replaced and of course who in the world would save this kind of info years later!! Or a junk appliance. It’s a tad upsetting.
