Western Union Financial Services Inc. and The Western Union Co. have agreed to settle a class action lawsuit alleging the companies failed to adequately notify customers of unredeemed money transfer transactions. If you initiated a money transfer in the United States with Western Union between Jan. 1, 2001 and Jan.3, 2013, and your money transfer was not redeemed within 60 days, you may be eligible to receive payment from the class action settlement.
Who’s Eligible
Class Members of the Western Union money transfer settlement include all persons who initiated any Western Union transaction in the United States between Jan. 1, 2001 and Jan. 3, 2013, and whose transaction was not redeemed within 60 calendar days and who either:
- Have not claimed their money transfer funds (nor had that money claimed on their behalf) from Western Union, or
- Were informed by written communication that their money was about to escheat to the state, district, territory or U.S. jurisdiction in which their money transfers were initiated, and who sought and received a refund of their money but did not receive a payment for interest Western Union earned on that money.
Potential Award
Varies. Class Members who submit a valid Claim Form will be entitled to receive lump sum cash refunds from the Western Union class action Settlement Fund in an amount equal to the unclaimed funds, less administrative fees and charges as specified in their contracts, plus interest earned by Western Union while the funds were held by Western Union.
Class Members whose funds escheat after Jan. 3, 2013, but before any appeals are resolved, will only be entitled to receive a lump sum cash payment of interest earned on those funds while those funds were held by Western Union, paid out of an account held by Western Union instead of the Settlement Fund.
Proof of Purchase
You must provide a photocopy of a valid government-issued picture ID (such as a driver’s license, passport or state-issued ID) showing the name and signature of individual signing claim.

What if I beleive my refund should be more than what it shows I will receive?
Guess it’s too late for me. BUT! Hope another chance comes along. I did buy a money order from them for $20. I never knew it was not cashed & then sent back to me till 2 years later. When i tried to get some money back, all they wanted to give me was $5! That is a 75% loss. I expected to lose money, maybe a few bucks but, $15…? No matter what the law says they’re allowed to do,….that is NOT right. I still have the money order there as a reminder NEVER to do business with them again.
They held two mortgage payments of mine for my re-modification loan. My house ended up foreclosing for lack of payment which I swore to the heavens I sent them. 4 years after foreclosure I receive the notice about the money settlement agreement. Western union sent me 1 transaction back for 3,900 and the second transaction of 3,900 was escheat to the state and they sent me the pennies that were left after they pinched it. I look forward to whatever I receive from this.
I have recently experienced something similar in dealing with Western Union. I was sending money to my girlfriend in the Philippines. Suddenly, Western Union refused to send any transfers. When I tried to send via Money Gram or other institutions I was refused. Now I cannot transfer money using these services. It seems Im on a blacklist. On Sept 1st, 2015 I to send money to a friend using Western Union. My friend, here in North Carolina could not pick it up because Western Union refused to transfer. I have received no notification about the transfer from Western Union. What is going on?
UDATE: All objections have now been resolved by the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals. This decision should result in an extension of the claim form deadline 180 calendar days following the May 1 ruling. The estimated claim form deadline is Oct. 28, 2015. However, as of this writing, there is still no new claim form deadline posted on the settlement website. We will provide an update as soon as its available.
Oct.28,2015 is the claim form deadline how could this be possible when every time I checked the website for a claim form to complete no form was available !!
