Motel 6 has agreed to pay $12 million to resolve claims that they shared Latino guest information with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

The settlement benefits consumers who rented rooms of certain Motel 6 locations in Washington between Jan. 1, 2015 and Sept. 17, 2017. A full list of the affected locations is available in the “Who’s Eligible” section below.

Even if Motel 6 customers did not have any further contact with ICE, they are eligible for $50 if their private information was shared.

The Motel 6 ICE class action lawsuit was filed in January 2018. In the complaint, the Washington Attorney General’s office claimed that the hotel chain had a corporate policy of sharing private guest information with ICE when it was requested. Some of the hotel locations allegedly provided information almost daily.

Information was allegedly shared with ICE without agents providing warrants or establishing probable cause, according to the Motel 6 class action lawsuit.

ICE then reportedly used the information to make immigration arrests if guests had Latino-sounding names.

The Washington Attorney General claimed that this practice was a violation of the state’s anti-discrimination and consumer protection laws.

In April 2019, Motel 6 agreed to pay $12 million to resolve the claims against them. The budget motel chain did not admit any wrongdoing by settling the class action allegations against them but is reportedly seeking to “take corporate responsibility for past actions that adversely affected some of its customers.”

The settlement will provide cash payments and will require Motel 6 to implement a new training and compliance plan.

Settlement payment amounts will vary. According to the settlement notice, payment amounts will vary “depending on the extent of the harm that occurred as a result of having your private information shared with DHS/ICE.”

In order to benefit from the Motel 6 ICE class action settlement, Class Members need to file a valid claim by Dec. 31, 2019. You do not have to provide your immigration status to submit a claim.

UPDATE: On July 30, 2020, Top Class Actions viewers started receiving checks in the mail from the Washington Motel 6 ICE class action settlement worth as much as $100! Congratulations to everyone who filed a claim and got PAID!

Wow, I agree 100% with Al !!! This is a travesty — Does this mean that the people who broke our laws to come here actually get PAID for committing this crime??? …or does the money just go to people who were innocent of wrongdoing? If it’s the former, this is truly why the US is going downhill so fast. This $$$ needs to go back to the American TAXPAYERS who are robbed each year in order to pay for the needs of foreigners who come here and are immediately living on the dole!

  5. Al says:

So you enter our country ILLEGALLY, steal jobs, welfare benefits & commit other crimes & good old commie WA State REWARDS by extorting up $7,500 from a LEGAL, TAXPAYING business all so they can buy your vote & that of your anchor babies in the future. . Unreal! To every ILLEGAL in this country, you are breaking our immigration laws & STEALING desperately needed jobs & welfare benefits from our most vulnerable citizens.

      100% spot on!

    2. Smartie Pants says:

I doubt any people who were actually detained and removed by ICE is going to be filing any claims in this settlement — mostly likely because they are still detained without rights, or already have been deported out of the country and don’t know about this lawsuit because there’s no known address for the settlement notice to be mailed to. That means majority of the people filing for this settlement will be those who had their information shared without proper warrants, or those who were wrongly arrested by ICE because they had “Latino-sounding names” even though they are citizens or documented immigrants. If that isn’t discrimination and a violation of our constitutional rights and privacy, I don’t know what is! So get off your ignorant soap box and read before you start spewing more hate and ignorance.
