A $17 million class action settlement will end class action allegations that Vizio Inc. collected, stored, and shared viewing habits of smart TV owners without their knowledge or consent.

Vizio smart TV owners who connected their television to the internet between Feb. 1, 2014 and Feb. 6, 2017, could get cash from this class action settlement.

Numerous Vizio class action lawsuits accused the electronics manufacturer of violating consumer privacy laws including the Video Privacy Protection Act, as well as the Electronic Communications Privacy Act.

In 20 consolidated Vizio class action lawsuits, plaintiffs claim the company did not disclose to smart TV owners that their viewing habits would be tracked and shared with third parties as a way to target advertisements.

Vizio attempted to have the case thrown out, but those dismissal bids were denied after a federal judge determined that the plaintiffs raised sufficient claims under the Wiretap Act.

The Vizio smart TV class action settlement is expected to provide between $13 and $31 to Class Members who file a valid and timely claim.

In addition to the $17 million settlement fund, the defendant has also agreed to change its viewing data collection policies by providing an “accept” or “decline” express consent to smart TV owners.

Further, the Vizio smart TV class action settlement requires Vizio to delete all of the viewing data it has collected during the Class period.

The Vizio TV class action settlement estimates that there are about 16 million Class Members.

The Vizio class action settlement also provides $5.61 million for Class Counsel expenses and a service award to each lead plaintiff in the amount of $5,000.

Class Members who want to object to the settlement or wish to be excluded from its terms have until April 29, 2019, to do so.

Who’s Eligible

Class Members include all U.S. residents who bought a Vizio smart television and connected it to the internet between Feb. 1, 2014 and Feb. 6, 2017.

Consumers do not need to provide a receipt along with their Claim Form.

    I got the first email April 15th saying to expect another email with payment information:

    Beginning April 22, 2020, you will be sent a distribution payment related to the claim you submitted in the class action settlement of the In re: VIZIO, Inc., Consumer Privacy Litigation, Case No. 8:16-ml-02693-JLS. It will take approximately two weeks for all distribution payments to be issued.

    When your distribution payment is issued, you will receive an email notification from info@mail.VizioTVsettlement.com that indicates your payment amount and allows you to instantaneously receive your payment through a number of digital platforms such as a virtual Mastercard debit card, Amazon, PayPal, and other leading retailers. Your payment will be sent immediately; no app or registration will be required to receive funds.

    It is May 9th and still no second email. Anyone else have this happening?

      I called, left a message, missed the returned call but they left a voicemail. It’s outlooks fault! lol I had to email them and give an alternative email. This was 2 days ago, this week is supposed to be the last set of emails.

        Got this email today 5/27

        Please allow this email to confirm that your payment has been marked for digital payment reissue to your updated email address. Digital payment reissues will begin going out on May 29 and may take a few business days until all recipients receive their email. The emails will be sent from info@mail.VizioTVsettlement.com.

        So another 2 to 3 weeks for me at least.

    I got an email stating I had $17.99 from the settlement and it offered a few ways I could receive my payment. After some searching I found a way to sign up to receive a paper check. The next day I got another email just like the first so I applied once again. They’re saying it’ll take a couple months for me to get the paper check. $17.99

      Well that’s great I guess. Though I still haven’t received anything. I’m sending it straight to my PayPal so I can get my cash I don’t care how much it is. They’ve already ripped us all off. I’ve personally spoke to several reps who told me the 8th was the last rolling payment send out. But clearly that wasn’t true at all. The website says until the 15th so they need to get themselves together

    So I was told that today was the last batch of payment emails to be sent out and I still haven’t received anything. This is a bunch of bs for money that’s owed. And honestly for disrupting someone privacy we get paid the least when we bought the TVs is a bunch of mess. I’m not a happy camper. Then customer service tells me he’s not really sure but I should receive payment by Monday. BS

      I didn’t know when we were getting paid but i JUST found out now through ordering something on amazon they actually paid via gift card on amazon. *scratches her head* not sure how that happened but I am surprised. I definitely hope you get yours asap though for me it was only 17 dollars. Least that little helps get some food ordered for home ;) So win win

    while I elected for a cash payment the email it wallow the instructions there go get a paper check mailed to me. Again i went on the website and STILL Isn’t what i wanted so i called them (toll free number) and was told to go on the website and follow nothing the instructions on how to get a paper check. STILL NO INSTRUCTIONS HOW TO GET A PAPER CHECK .. I finally gave in and elected to get a card for online shopping SOMETHING I DO NOT DO. now i feel like they managed to buffalo their way around consumers. forcing us to take their options like it or not…..

    I’ll definitely keep you guys updated. It’s now 11:56 am central time and still no email. I’m waiting on a call back. Someone usually calls me back by the end of the day. Definitely unprofessional. Why is it taking weeks to give people $17-31??? This is crazy… especially because we’re in a pandemic. It may not be a lot but it’s owed and could buy food or gas and maybe both.

    I haven’t received anything yet! I’ve called left 3 voicemails. They always call me back but I’m being told different bs. One lady said they’d have all the payments sent out by 7th. No payment the 7th came and left. Then one lady said by today the 8th is the last big batch of emails going out so we’ll see. She said it’s over 50,000 emails they send out a day. Even though the website says the by the 15th the representatives say different. What time of day are the emails sent? When did you guys get yours? Day or night? In my opinion they should’ve sent them all in one day. They got paid the big bucks to pay us and they can’t even pay us correctly it’s bs. They should’ve just mailed checks because this is crazy.

        I agree also I’ve emailed after they sent the email stating that the payments would start on April 22nd and I still haven’t gotten anything they should’ve sent checks instead I wouldn’t hire them for anything bad business
