Universal Property class action settlement

Universal Property & Casualty Insurance Company has agreed to settle a class action lawsuit filed by customers who allege their insurance documents were made available on the Lender Verification Portal without sufficient security procedures to protect the sensitive customer information contained in the documents.

If you insured real property with Universal Property between Sept. 1, 2013 and March 31, 2016, you may be entitled to benefits from the Universal Property class action settlement.

In March 2016, four Universal Property customers filed the class action lawsuit, which alleges customers’ insurance declaration and evidence of insurance pages were available on the Lender Verification Portal even though sufficient security procedures were not in place to protect customers’ sensitive information.

Universal Property stands by its website security procedures. The plaintiffs have not alleged any improper access of the documents or that they have suffered any losses. However, Universal Property has agreed to settle the class action lawsuit to avoid the risk and uncertainty of ongoing litigation.

Under the terms of the proposed class action settlement, Universal Property has agreed to provide ID Experts’ managed recovery and restoration services to Class Members who become victims of identity theft.

These services will be available for two years from the class action settlement’s effective date. The Universal Property class action settlement will also provide Class Members with identity theft reimbursement insurance offered by ID Experts.

The Universal Property class action settlement was preliminarily approved on Feb. 14, 2017.

The deadline to opt out of or object to the Universal Property class action settlement is June 14, 2017.

We had a terrible storm and I had a lot of roof damage to my house which I did not know until it started leaking in my bathroom. I went to my insurance agency and I was told to file a claim to get my roof fix. I filed the claim and universal property told me that they would not fix my roof because I had not been maintaining the proper maintenance on my roof and that is why it was denying the claim. I said what kind of proper maintenance do you maintain on a roof. Are you suppose to go up and sweep it every day and wash it to make sure it is clean. They are full of bologna. We pay all this money for all these years and never file a claim, but when we do file one we are denied, its just highway robbery without a gun.

I was a customer during that time frame. They also are guilty of defrauding homeowners, when I took out a policy from them, they allowed the lender to take an additional policy, same coverage date, paid it out of my escrow, the lender alone was the lost payee. Then my mortgage payments went up $200 since the escrow was short from them collecting a double policy, after many calls to Wells Fargo and Universal Insurance we hire an attorney. I was reimbursed for the extra policy they collected but it took 7 months for them to settle and pay us back. The lender didn’t care they just pay whatever bill they get without asking approval from the home owner the money should have gone back into my escrow. Theft and fraud from both sides.

I was a customer during that time frame. I was the victim of identity theft and am still trying to get my credit rating restored. They also are guilty of defrauding homeowners, when I took out a policy from them, they allowed the lender to take an additional policy, same coverage date, paid it out of my escrow, the lender alone was the lost payee. Then they cancelled me. I was rembursed for the remaining months I paid for, they reimbursed the lender who kept the money when it should have gone back into my escrow. Theft and fraud
