Universal Property & Casualty Insurance Company has agreed to settle a class action lawsuit filed by customers who allege their insurance documents were made available on the Lender Verification Portal without sufficient security procedures to protect the sensitive customer information contained in the documents.
If you insured real property with Universal Property between Sept. 1, 2013 and March 31, 2016, you may be entitled to benefits from the Universal Property class action settlement.
In March 2016, four Universal Property customers filed the class action lawsuit, which alleges customers’ insurance declaration and evidence of insurance pages were available on the Lender Verification Portal even though sufficient security procedures were not in place to protect customers’ sensitive information.
Universal Property stands by its website security procedures. The plaintiffs have not alleged any improper access of the documents or that they have suffered any losses. However, Universal Property has agreed to settle the class action lawsuit to avoid the risk and uncertainty of ongoing litigation.
Under the terms of the proposed class action settlement, Universal Property has agreed to provide ID Experts’ managed recovery and restoration services to Class Members who become victims of identity theft.
These services will be available for two years from the class action settlement’s effective date. The Universal Property class action settlement will also provide Class Members with identity theft reimbursement insurance offered by ID Experts.
The Universal Property class action settlement was preliminarily approved on Feb. 14, 2017.
The deadline to opt out of or object to the Universal Property class action settlement is June 14, 2017.
Who’s Eligible
According to the Settlement Notice: “The Settlement Class is defined as all persons who insured real property with Universal Property between September 1, 2013 and March 31, 2016.”
Potential Award
The Universal Property settlement provides Class Members with managed recovery and restoration services and identity theft reimbursement insurance provided by ID Experts.
The managed recovery and restoration services will be available to all Class Members who become victims of identity theft within two years of the effective date of the Universal Property settlement. These services include recovery and restoration for issues related to identity theft, account creation, medical record theft, tax fraud, rental application, benefit fraud, account takeover and utility creation.
The identity theft reimbursement insurance will be available to Class Members for one year after the effective date of the Universal Property settlement. This insurance will reimburse Class Members for expenses associated with restoring their identities if they become a victim of identity theft during the policy period.

They are a horrible company. My father passed away they would not work with me though I’m the executor and they said he’s dead we’d cancel the insurance anyways. It took 3 calls before anyone even said sorry for your loss.
