Subaru of America Inc. has agreed to settle a class action lawsuit over accusations that certain car models contain a defect which results in excessive oil consumption.

Under the terms of the settlement agreement, Subaru will reimburse car owners and lessees who can prove they suffered financially because of the alleged unreasonable amount of oil burning their cars required.

In addition, Subaru will also grant an extended warranty so drivers are covered for eight years, instead of the standard five.

Subaru has not admitted any fault by agreeing to the settlement but did so in order to avoid the cost and risk of further litigation.

  1. Cara Ballas says:

I recently bought a 2011 Forester from A+ auto sales in Ohio and they never said a thing about an oil issue. Then I I took it in to get the oil changed and my mechanic said it was completely empty! He scolded me for not checking it and I told him I only had it about 2 months! My mechanic then checked the piston rings and said they were faulty. He Said the whole engine had to be removed to fix it. Since I did not have the money to fix the issue I have had to check the oil every week, and often as soon as three weeks to a month or so later I need to put a quart of oil in. That is ridiculous. Not to mention the oil light does not even come on. So why isn’t this Subaru within the VIN numbers!! It clearly has the same problem.

  2. Renee Maxfield says:

I bought a 2014 Forester. Dec 2018 I’m just like most. Did the car fax. I don’t do a lot of traveling but I have noticed the oil consumption. First time I took it back for oil change was less than the 5000 oil change when I bought it. I had added a quart at 1200 miles after they serviced it when I bought it. Well I’ve added another quart 1200 miles later again. I looked into it myself. My thoughts are. Why was the certified dealership legally able to pass this on to me ? I’ve almost owned it a year and they had oh nothing to say about the oil consumption when I took it in. How about a lemon law lawyer. I want a new car with all disclosed issues or not upon sales signing!

  3. Mike says:

Same here. Napleton Subaru in Schaumburg overfilled the oil for the test. Before returning for the 1200 miles it was clearly under the min mark. They took it in “the back” and said it was between and they weren’t going to do anything so they “topped it off”. Obviously Subaru is still ripping off its customers and not following this lawsuit.

  4. Tetesa Carr says:

I just bought a 2013 Forrester as of January 31, of this year. I had no knowledge that there was anything like an oil consumption test or an oil problem because the Carfax doesn’t pick this up when you’re purchasing it. So far it’s run 2 quarts low and two oil changes of 3000 miles. They don’t want to on her fixing the motor because it is 4/10 of an ounce under the requirement. I would like to get with other people who were having trouble and not having the results that they feel they should have which is only just and fair. I think this is unfair I work seven days a Week to help take care of my family I don’t have that kind of money to put a new engine in on my own. I’m sure most everybody here that’s having these problems are in the same boat and even if you did why should you, they sold a defective product I think they should be responsible to fix it. I think we should all get together and start a new class action suit because I didn’t even have an awareness of the first one that was there. I wouldn’t have purchased it had I know there was these kind of problems And they were not going to be responsible and fix them.

    1. Justin Hunter says:

I would be in I was unaware of the issue. Mines burning about a quart a week!!!!!

    2. Kimberly Boyd says:

I am in! everything you guys are saying is the same BS I am dealing with too!

I purchased a 2015 Legacy in September of 2014 and since January 2019 my oil light comes on and fortunately i was Taught how to check my oil. Each time the oil light has come on every 2months. My mechanic told me that Subaru was notorious for losing oil. As the others above I would be left out in the cold. This was going to be my last car, plus i had Been telling my friends how much I liked the car. Now i regret Even buying the car and I’m also on a fixed income. Shame on Subaru, the corporate people that will not help us that are left in the cold because there literary are too big to lick there wounds.

    1. Teresa Carr says:

I think We need to get together and have another class action suit. I just bought my 2013 this year and had no idea it had an oil problem now they don’t want to fix it and I bought the extended warranty. I had no clue there was a problem because the car fax I was provided never flagged a problem because this was a problem from three years ago .

      1. Elena says:

I agree, having the same issue, I’m down for another class action suit.

        1. Mark says:

          Subarus suck-
Oil by the gallon. I have a 2016 forester that smokes like a chimney only a month after an oil change.

        2. Machelle Jamerson says:

Im fown to. I have 2005 outback in shop now i just bought haf oil changed and it fued no warning after 400 miles into my ttip.

  6. Lt Webb says:

Have a 2014 Subaru Outback that I bought new. It now has 75K miles on it, but I’ve been seeing that oil light come on soon after an oil change for years. I’ve asked the Service Dept about it since it started. No one ever mentioned there was a rampant problem with this, and once in May of 2019, the oil light came on 1500 miles after an oil change, I was going on an 800 mile trip with my grandchildren in tow, and I was told Subaru Service couldn’t get me in for 2 weeks to check anything. It took 3 mechanics to even tell the oil was over a quart low, as the dipstick is slick and hard to read. I found out about this problem a few weeks ago (August 2019) when a mechanic looked up why this was happening. I’ve contacted a different Subaru service shop, Subaru corporate, etc. After a dozen or so emails, I’ve been told my rig is not covered, there is no recall – only a class action suit settlement, and any diagnostics/ repairs are on me. The shame of it is, I’ve sent several people to Subaru who have bought one on my recommendation. Never again. And I’ll bad mouth them ’til hell freezes over.

    1. Roberta says:

Well, I called many times. After replacing short block one year and one month, which SOA covered(out of warranty), my engine and oil light is on. Since it’s one month past the year warranty that the short block was replaced, I’m out of warranty, again. SOA , now, will only pay 50% of the job, after many calls. My part is costing me $4100! SOA is paying the other half. Needs a new rebuilt engine! I will never buy another Subaru. Subaru’s have a reputation of going way over 200,000 miles. Not mine!

  7. Carol Odmark says:

We’ve been Subaru owners and touters since 1986. Sold it with 250,000 miles on it. Then a 2003 Forester with 203,000 miles, still own it. Then a 2012 Forester. This was to be our last car as we are 72/78 years old and on a fixed income. When we got our air bag recall (You have our address) we took care of it. I got on the internet to see if there were any other recalls, but as I scrolled down I noticed all the oil complaints. I immediately took it to have the oil checked and guess what..no oil. That was before our normal oil change time. They told me to check it every 2500 miles. We have and no oil shows on the dip stick. I’m through touting Subaru. Are we doomed to buying oil til we dies? We’ve been betrayed by Subaru. No more Subarus for us.. You could have been “HONEST’ up front when you KNEW about the oil consumption. I see we are outside of your updated warrantee and I’m sure we are not the only ones.

  8. K says:

Find it funny the 2012 legacy isn’t on the list yet has this problem. I guess we have to fight again.

  9. Gwendolyn Robinson says:

I recently bought a 2011 Subaru Outback. Last month the low oil light started coming on. Yesterday I heard and read up on the oil consumption law suite. The lawyer-s won and although Subaru didn’t admit to knowing the problem with this engine-they did agree to make it right with their customers. Where does that leave me?

  10. Lukas Potgieter says:

Hi.I bought a 2013 Automatic Crosstrek from a used car dealer.I am very dissappointed with this oil burning problem.I did not know about it.I test drove the car and like it very much. The motor ran smooth and quiet. Is it possible that the previous owner took the money and traded the car off?As far as I know nothing was ever done to the engine. My wife bought a brand new Outback in 2017.One of the reasons I wanted a Subaru.Well now I think she should just go and trade that in on a new Honda. It seems like Subaru cars are nothing but problems.

    1. Brian Stephens says:

Same exact thing happened to me. Is there anything we can do?
