Subaru of America Inc. has agreed to settle a class action lawsuit over accusations that certain car models contain a defect which results in excessive oil consumption.

Under the terms of the settlement agreement, Subaru will reimburse car owners and lessees who can prove they suffered financially because of the alleged unreasonable amount of oil burning their cars required.

In addition, Subaru will also grant an extended warranty so drivers are covered for eight years, instead of the standard five.

Subaru has not admitted any fault by agreeing to the settlement but did so in order to avoid the cost and risk of further litigation.

Affected vehicles covered in the class action settlement include the following:

Automatic/CVT Transmission

  • 2011-14 Forester (below VIN *529004)
  • 2012-13 Impreza 4-Door (below VIN *033336)
  • 2012-13 Impreza 5-Door Wagon (below VIN *886714)
  • 2013 Crosstrek (below VIN *856139)
  • 2013 Legacy (below VIN *048086)
  • 2013 Outback (below VIN *321435)

Manual Transmission

  • 2011-15 Forester (below VIN *543624)
  • 2012-15 Impreza (below VIN *270253)
  • 2013-15 Crosstrek (below VIN *270284)
  • 2013-14 Legacy (all)
  • 2013-14 Outback (all)
Subaru owners/lessees wishing to be excluded from the class action settlement must do so by June 13, 2016.
Who’s Eligible

Class Members include all U.S. residents who purchased or leased one of the specific Subaru vehicles listed above between 2011 and 2015.

Potential Award

Extended 8 year/100,000 Warranty and Oil Reimbursement

The Subaru class action settlement will award Class Members an extended warranty, as well as cash reimbursement for costs related to an oil consumption repair.

Proof of Purchase

N/A

Subaru settlement Class Members will automatically receive the extended warranty without submitting a Claim Form. However, those individuals seeking financial compensation from the alleged oil burning defect are required to fill out and mail a Claim Form by Oct. 1, 2016 and include receipts (or other proof) that show you paid for an oil consumption repair.

    I am 6-months into having the same issue with my 2011 Subaru Outback. Dealer is being a real ass about wanting to help at all. Always heard Subaru was a great car. .not so sure now. Will never own another.

    I bought my 2013 legacy last year within 2 months my oil light came on thank god I was right by Jensen tire I pulled in I had NO oil then it happened again and again and again it’s certified so it’s covered to 100,000 miles really besides the point it’s the inconvenience I was a caregiver at the time with my client in my car! Should have stuck with a honda!!!!

    I just traded in my 2012 Legacy 3.6 L R. The oil light came on right after I brought the car. When I asked the service writer about it he told me that it was a bug in the system and that the car was ok. Needless to say it continued up until a week and a half ago when the motor blew due to the oil burning. I drove the knocking Legacy to Infinity where I purchased a Q70. Is the Legacy on the list for the law suit?

    Subaru’s in general burn a lot of oil. LOL i have 2008 legacy and monitor oil consumption monthly. Use a high quality filter and oil and keep oil on hand.

    I bought my 2011 Subaru Forester in Sept. 2014 from a Subaru dealer and bought an extended warranty which is still valid. I had no idea that this issue, or lawsuit existed and just now found out after my Subaru stalled and the engine was destroyed; my last oil change was 2000 miles ago. I am trying to figure out where I fall in all of this. I am beyond the 100,000 miles covered through the lawsuit and its been almost 2 years since I purchased the vehicle, but I am still within my extended warranty so does my extended warranty cover this? Am I screwed? I am not sure what to do next and in the meantime my car is sitting at the repair shop and I cannot afford to fix it.

    I have 2010 impreza with the same issue and haved dumped almost two thousand dollars into my vehicle and had to have the engine replaced twice. What about 2010? It sucks that other car owners with vehicles with the same issue outside of those year limitations are kind of screwed

    What about the excessive oil consumption on 2015 Subarus? Soon after my purchase of a brand new Outback I had to start carrying around a quart of oil, just in case! I am now on my 2nd oil consumption test. Will there be any compensation for these newer models? Thank you.

    I guess the $7000 I had to spend on my 2009 Forester isnt covered :( Head gasket, separate oil leak, AND a thrown rod due to leaking/burning oil. :(

      My 2006 Forester – new head gasket before 100,000K & new engine at about 140K.

    What about those of us who were aware of this issue and proactively purchased an extended warranty. The 8 years does not come close to our out of pocket cost.

    What if anything is being offered to those of use who where aware of this issue and proactively purchased an extended warranty. The eight years doesn’t come close to covering our out of pocket cost.
