UPDATE:

  • Congratulations to everyone who filed a claim and got paid!

Certain Altima owners and lessees may be eligible to benefit from a class action settlement resolving claims that some Nissan Altima headlights — specifically halogen headlights — are defective.

The Class includes residents of the United States or its territories, including Puerto Rico, who purchased or leased a 2013-2018 Nissan Altima manufactured with halogen headlights.

All model-year 2013 through 2018 Nissan Altima vehicles were manufactured with halogen headlamps and are included in the Class, except the following, which were manufactured with Xenon or LED headlamps and are therefore not covered under the settlement:

  • Model year 2013-2018, 3.5L SL trim
  • Model year 2017, 3.5L SR trim
  • Model year 2016-2017, 2.5L SR trim, with LED Appearance package
  • Model year 2016-2018, 2.5L SR trim, with Tech package
  • Model year 2017, 2.5L SR trim, Midnight Edition

The settlement does not cover lightbulbs, only headlamp assemblies.

Plaintiffs in a class action lawsuit alleged the Nissan Altima headlights were defective in that they could become delaminated, resulting in dimmer light coming from the low beams.

On average, Nissan sold an average of about 294,000 Altimas annually between 2013 and 2018, according to data provided by Engine Patrol.

Nissan Altima Halogen Headlights Settlement Benefits

Class Members are entitled to several benefits under the terms of the settlement agreement:

  • Warranty extension: Nissan has agreed to extend the terms of the Nissan New Vehicle Limited Warranty for the headlamp assemblies in all Class Vehicles by 36 months, subject to the terms and conditions of the original New Vehicle Limited Warranty applicable to the Class Vehicle.
  • Reimbursement for replacement of headlamps: Nissan will reimburse Class Members for parts and labor paid for by the Class Member for qualifying repairs involving the replacement of headlamp assemblies if the work is performed up to Oct. 25, 2021, regardless of whether it was done within the extended warranty. If the replacement was performed by an authorized dealer, the full amount the Class Member paid will be reimbursed. If the replacement was performed by a non-Nissan automotive repair facility, the automaker will reimburse actual costs for parts and labor paid up to $1,200 per replacement pair. If the Class Member paid for parts but not labor, Nissan will reimburse the actual costs for parts and shipping.
  • Reimbursement within extended warranty and prior to effective date: Class Members within their extended warranty period and do not want to wait until the settlement’s effective date to acquire replacement headlamps may pay out of pocket for replacement headlamps from an authorized Nissan dealer and submit a claim for reimbursement.
  • One-time replacement for vehicles already outside the extended warranty: If the Class Member’s 72-month extended warranty period has expired and they are experiencing headlamp dimming due to delamination, Nissan will provide a one-time free replacement of the headlamp assemblies. A valid “Out-of-Warranty Claim Form” must be filed within 65 days of the settlement effective date, and the replacement must be completed by an authorized Nissan dealer within six months after that 65-day deadline.

The settlement administrator will mail a notice of the effective date and Out-of-Warranty Claim Forms to Class Members who can be identified through public records as having extended warranties that will be expired as of the Effective Date.

A final approval hearing in the Nissan Altima headlights class action settlement will take place Dec. 20, 2021.

The deadline to opt out of or object to the settlement is Nov. 22, 2021.

The deadline for in-warranty repairs — within six years if it’s a new purchase or lease — begins on the settlement’s effective date, expected to be Jan. 20, 2022, or later.

The deadline to claim a one-time out-of-warranty replacement will be announced when the settlement becomes effective.

The deadline to file a reimbursement claim is April 25, 2022.

I have a 2013 Nissan Altima. I Can not see on low beam. Scheduled an appointment at the dealer to have replacements. They refused to replace them . Called another dealer they said we’ve not replaced one head light yet.

    1. Nolivier says:

We are having our halogen headlights replaced at our Nissan dealership right now. You have to pay for it and get reimbursed from the settlement.

    2. Michelle says:

I seen your comment and definitely had to say something. I had an appt. with Andy Mohr Nissan to get my daughters headlamps replaced April 18, 2022, I waited for 35 min and the lady came and told me that she was sorry but the headlamps weren’t even in!!! Ridiculous!!.

    3. Tyrah McDuffy says:

I got my car checked in March… my headlights just came in last week. I’m getting mine replaced this week it did take a long time…and I did not have to pay up front. I filed the claim and had it tested. Even if the claims states repairs need to be done by Sept 23 my dealer explained to me as long as I got my headlights checked out I’m good. Not my fault if I’m waiting on parts

  4. Esther says:

  5. Randy Patrom says:

I filed a out of warranty claim and took my car to a authorized Nissan dealer on 03.25.2022 they said that there was nothing wrong with my lights. I asked them to explain why the headlights are so dim that you can not drive the car at night. They gave me the phone number to Nissan Consumer Affairs and said file a complaint.

    1. Kimberly S Sexton says:

Great o got a 2015 and have to drive with my bright light because on regular lights can’t see a thing

    2. Bev Mcclellan says:

I also filed an out of warranty claim, but as I understand it, you could not take your car to the Nissan dealership until AFTER March 26. Maybe the problem is that you took yours in too early,,,? I don’t know why they wouldn’t just tell you that though. I am currently trying to schedule an appointment to get my replacements.

      1. Linda Black says:

Took my 2014 in to the dealership today and I guess there is a second stage to filling this claim. I never received anything from anyone, can’t find anything on the website and can get ahold of a person at the phone number the dealership gave me! Very frustrating!!

  6. Louise costa says:

I have a 2013 altama the headlights are bad on low beam do I still have the chance to get them replaced under the warranty from the class action suit just found out about the recall can’t drive it at nite

  7. Toma Thomas says:

I have a 2014 Nissan Altima. Coolest car I’ve ever owned.
My family members kept insisting I take my car in to have my headlights replaced as they were afraid for me to drive at night without my high beams on.
I took my car into the dealership where I bought it to see what the problem was & they wanted OVER $1500 to repair what they said they “THOUGHT” the problem could be”.
I just couldn’t afford that price as my car was out of warranty so I declined the repair.
About a year later some friends & I went on a trip & everyone was afraid for us to drive after dark because of my headlights. So I finally took the car to another repair shop and spent $498.60 on headlights, side marker lights + labor…we still could not see well when lights were on dim.
I have risked my life & the safety of my passengers for over 7 years now. Can I at last get my car headlamps repaired by Nissan even though it’s out of warranty?
Also, why can’t I get reimbursement from Nissan for replacing the headlights when that never was the problem in the first place???
I have loved my Nissan Altima otherwise & had planned on getting a new one. This headlamp issue has however been so frustrating not to mention dangerous! I’m in hopes Nissan will do the honorable thing & have a recall for the headlights as they have for the Altima hood latch, before someone is seriously injured.

  8. mike says:

Does the settlement cover a salvage title altima?

  9. Evelyn says:

I have a 2013 Nissan Altima SV That has the same headlight issues as everyone else. Will I be covered under the settlement?

  10. Keva says:

I have a 2013 Altima SV & I only drive at night if I have to. The headlights on low beam are terrible.
