kia class action lawsuit

A settlement has been proposed in a class action lawsuit over allegations certain Kia Sorento vehicles were equipped with a defective crankshaft bolt that could break in some conditions.

If you owned or leased a model year 2003-2006 Kia Sorento with a 3.5-liter engine, you may be entitled to benefits from this Kia class action settlement.

Plaintiff Yvonne Robinson and several other plaintiffs filed the Kia class action lawsuit in 2013, alleging certain 2003-2006 model year Kia Sorento vehicles with 3.5-liter engines have a crankshaft pulley bolt defect that can result in the bolt breaking.

When the crankshaft pulley bolt breaks, it can damage other engine components, the Kia Sorento class action lawsuit alleges. The damaged engine components can reportedly cause significant issues, including the loss of steering control and possible engine failure that can increase the risk of an accident. The plaintiffs assert Kia knew about the Sorento engine defect for years but failed to disclose the problem to consumers.

Kia denies the allegations but the vehicle manufacturer has agreed to settle the Kia Sorento class action lawsuit to avoid the cost and burden of ongoing litigation. The Kia crankshaft bolt defect settlement was preliminarily approved on Nov. 2, 2016.

Class Members who wish to exclude themselves from or object to the Kia Sorento settlement must do so no later than April 3, 2017.

Who’s Eligible

Class Members of the Kia Sorento settlement include: “All persons in the United States who currently own or lease or previously owned or leased a Class Vehicle in the United States.”

Under the terms of the Kia class action settlement, Class Vehicles include model year 2003-2006 Kia Sorento vehicles with a 3.5-liter engine.

Potential Award

Up to $4,900.

The Kia Sorento class action settlement provides reimbursement for certain out-of-pocket expenses for repairs related to the crankshaft pulley bolt failure.

The amount each Class Member is eligible to receive depends on several factors, including whether they are an original purchaser and still own the Class vehicle; they are an original purchaser of the Class vehicle but no longer own the vehicle; whether they purchased a used Class vehicle; and when the crankshaft pulley failure occurred.

Proof of Purchase

Class Members should submit documentation that shows they paid for parts, labor and/or towing related to a crankshaft pulley bolt failure.

  7. T Rock says:

I’m still driving my ’05 after 2 bolt failures, Pulley wobbles and I don’t use a/c or defog unless necessary – That’s what caused both failures. Have a new bolt & tools to repair OTR if needed but still waiting for Kia to at least credit me for a new crank pulley, roll pin & a new set of belts, 1 qt. of trans fluid, 1 gal anti-freeze & maybe an oil change too. Some folks got charged over $2500 for repairs, Some of us are mechanics, I went grocery shopping while it cooled down then pulled the loose parts & belts out of the way & drove it home!

  8. PF says:

Today is Sept. 19th. And have not received any notice at all.

  9. Virginia Gregory says:

Got letter asking for same information I already sent. Big surprise. Sent it again. They probably hope people won’t bother to resend. Has anyone received a check yet?

    1. Chicago says:

No… least u got a letter ain’t receive anything from them I bet they got there cut already

    2. RRS says:

They sent me a letter asking for proof that I paid for the repairs. I sent them invoices from the dealership showing the amount I was billed from the start, and I told them, of course I paid for the repairs. I wouldn’t have gotten my car back otherwise. Obviously none of us knew Kia failed to recall our vehicles because of this issue, so once the repairs were paid for, I had no real use for the actual receipts and the bank statements are hard to come by so long after the fact. They can’t say when exactly people should start seeing payments, but one administrator did tell me that checks have in fact started being sent, and overall I get the same “within 90 days” that’s always stated as a timeline for receiving money. I guess I can assume I’ll see something within the next week then, right?

  10. Virginia Gregory says:

Notice from court says we should be notified befor September 20th and paid by October 20?

    1. Anndrea says:

What notice? I havent heard anything yet.
