Hyundai has agreed to resolve Kia engine failure class action claims in a settlement deal, putting an end to allegations that certain Kia vehicles were equipped with defective engines.
Under the settlement, eligible Kia owners can collect a variety of benefits, including extended warranties, reimbursements, rebates and other compensation.
Owners and lessees of Class vehicles originally equipped with or fitted with a replacement genuine Theta II 2.0-liter or 2.4-liter gasoline direct injection engine are eligible for benefits from this settlement. Class vehicles include:
- 2011-2018 and certain 2019 model year Kia Optima vehicles;
- 2012-2018 and certain 2019 model year Kia Sorento vehicles; and
- 2011-2018 and certain 2019 model year Kia Sportage vehicles.
Plaintiffs in the Kia engine failure class action lawsuit claimed several Hyundai and Kia vehicles were equipped with a defective Theta engine.
The complaint alleged connecting rod bearings in the vehicles’ gasoline direct-injection (GDI) fuel system “undergo a prolonged failure.” When these rod bearings fracture, metal debris allegedly “accumulate in the engine oil,” contaminating it to a point the filter isn’t able to remove it all.
The contaminated oil is therefore circulated by the oil pump, damaging engine components and leading to an eventual “sudden and unexpected catastrophic engine failure,” the class action lawsuit said.
As a result, the vehicles were allegedly prone to engine failures or fires — putting consumers at risk for accidents and financial injury.
Several class action lawsuits were filed against the auto makers — leading the claims to be consolidated into a multidistrict litigation centered in California. Plaintiffs in these actions sought financial damages and other benefits for the injuries they allegedly sustained due to the defective engines.
Hyundai has not admitted to any wrongdoing, but has agreed to resolve the claims surrounding their Kia subsidiary in a settlement deal. Claims surrounding Hyundai engine failure were resolved in a similar deal. The settlements aim to avoid the costs and risks of a trial, but do not assign any wrongdoing to Hyundai.
The Kia engine failure class action settlement provides several forms of monetary and non-monetary benefits including warranty extensions, reimbursement for repairs and other costs, rebates, and other compensation. More information is available in the “Potential Award” section below.
In order to benefit from the Kia engine failure settlement, Class Members must file a valid claim form by Aug. 9, 2021.
For Class Members who experienced engine failure or fire after Aug. 28, 2020, they have until 90 days after the event to file a valid claim form. Claim forms should include documentation of engine failures, repairs, and other relevant information.
The deadline for exclusion and objection is Oct. 30, 2020. The final approval hearing for the Kia engine failure class action settlement is Nov. 13, 2020.

I own a 2010 Kia Soul…engine light stays on all the time…and no oil leaks but I have to check the oil all the time and keep oil in it…..to the right level…can not find out why the engine light stays on all the time…..I am the second owner… I have had it for around 4 years
My 2013 Kia Sorrento has been in the dealership service for 3 weeks now. No low oil light warning ( idiot light) engine damage, 3 day rental, $2500 bill two weeks ago and mounting and unless they replace the engine my Kia has over 60K on it. Certain Kia’s are known to burn oil after 60K miles.
I have a 2013 Kia Optima. There has been no issues. Do I need to take my car to a dealership to have it checked out? If issues do occur in the future will they be covered?
I have a 2013 Kia Optima, so if no issues yet (when and if I do) will this be covered???
2014 kia optima lx engine knocking so bad. I had to get it tow. Kia replace engine. So far its ok.
I have a 2016 Kia Soul with a bad engine. No warning at all. No lights on no oil leaks etc etc. ok has 84k on it. I’m the second owner but I’ve only had it six months.

Figures once again left out 3.3 liter used same parts had same failure I’m paying for a sorento that’s been down a year now bullshit!!!!!
I had my Kia Sorento towed in the shop for engine failure and while it was in the shop it ended up having to replace a new bumper and front grille and when I got my car back it needed a front end alignment and I had to pay for that why?your shop cause needing a front alignment from the accident my car was in while in your care Plus my engine light still comes on in the dash I take it back an they just do something and it goes out and they say as long as the vehicle still drive I should be ok I will never ever purchase another vehicle from KIA!!!!
I have a 2011 Kia Optima that gas had so many recalls on it it is ridiculous ..I should not have to fear my moter stalling or catching fire I travel through busy cities and with my kids .I am never at ease with this car.it has a bad exhaust oder and it has a ticking sound in it..Idk what to do
I have a 2015 kia soul with a bad engine that broke down with no visible engine light on no engine code readings that come uphas this happened to anyone else ???
No engine light no oil light nothing they upgraded knock srn ssd’s or software but nothing was wrong with it .totally screwed only for this reason I’ll never recommend a Kia 88k engine seized bearing failure one cyclender in the rear had a oil ring pressure loose a manufacturing error caused oil to burn away every 1000 miles. No oil light
