Jaguar agreed to a timing chain class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims certain models of its Land Rover and Range Rover vehicles have a defective timing chain.

The settlement benefits current and former lessees of model year 2012 to 2014 Land Rover LR4 and/or Range Rover Sport vehicles as of Aug. 6, 2021. Class Members can call 844-285-9444 to check whether their VIN is included in the Class Vehicles group.

Jaguar’s Land Rover vehicles are touted as luxury SUVs capable of traversing “every habitat” while “pushing every conceivable boundary,” according to the company’s website. Some Land Rover models start at over $100,000.

Despite these high price points, consumers may have overpaid for Land Rover models due to timing chain defects.

Plaintiffs in the Jaguar class action lawsuit claimed that, from 2012 to 2014, Land Rover and Range Rover Sport vehicles were sold with a defective timing chain. The timing chain in a vehicle allows engine valves to open and vent exhaust out of the engine while letting gas and air in.

Due to the alleged defect in Land Rover timing chains, the vehicles allegedly suffer from premature engine failure. The timing chains, timing chain tensioners, tensioner levers, and even the entire engine can fail due to the defect, the plaintiffs contend. This failure allegedly led to serious repairs that drivers were expected to foot the bill for.

Jaguar hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to resolve these claims with a class action settlement.

Under the Land Rover timing chain class action lawsuit settlement, Class Members can recover reimbursement for any timing chain repairs they paid for out of pocket. The reimbursement amount varies depending on the vehicle age and mileage range when repairs were completed.

Timing chain repairs completed in year six or from 50,001 to 70,000 miles will be reimbursed up to 60 percent.

Timing chain repairs completed in year seven or from 70,001 to 95,000 miles will be reimbursed up to 50 percent.

Timing chain repairs completed in year eight or from 85,001 to 100,000 miles will be reimbursed up to 40 percent.

Timing chain repairs completed after eight years or 100,000 miles are not eligible for reimbursement.

Timing chain repair reimbursement payments are capped at $4,000.

Engine repairs completed in year six or from 50,001 to 70,000 miles will be reimbursed up to 30 percent, with a maximum payment of $8,000.

Engine repairs completed in year seven or from 70,001 to 95,000 miles will be reimbursed up to 25 percent, with a maximum payment of $6,500.

Engine repairs completed in year eight or from 85,001 to 100,000 miles will be reimbursed up to 20 percent, with a maximum payment of $5,000.

The Jaguar Land Rover timing chain settlement also includes a warranty extension for timing chains and engine damage.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is Jan. 18, 2022.

The final approval hearing is scheduled for March 9, 2022.

Class Members have 90 days after final approval to submit a claim. Based on the scheduled final approval hearing, the claim deadline for the timing chain settlement is June 9, 2022.

  1. Julia says:

We just had total engine failure due to the timing chain issue and it will be 35k to fix. Range Rover corporate offered no help whatsoever.
2016 Range Rover V8 fully loaded and cost a pretty penny! Only ever serviced by LandRover dealership, no warning light ahead of time and barely made it off the highway! Totally unacceptable. I reached out to the firm that led the other models class action suit. They asked for VIN# and other information. Maybe they can start a new one if enough victims reach out to them

  2. Amanda says:

I don’t qualify because my timing belt went out at 50,008 miles and it’s a 2016 . Range Rover is such a scam . They are the opposite of luxury . I’ve been treated more professionally by the crackhead mechanic down the street

  3. A. Smith says:

Persons with “claim deficiencies” were sent an email notice in Sept/2022 with a website access code to fix their specific claim issue. The website added a “Fix A Claim” page for these deficiencies with an Oct/2022 deadline for completion. The “Fix A Claim” page now shows that the deadline for ALL claim deficiencies has passed with the access code field removed from the web page; thus, it appears that the submitted “fixes” are likely being reviewed prior to final payment to all (?). If you never received such an email, then likely your claim was found to not have any deficiencies. Please post any additional information you may have or if you receive payment. Thank you.

  4. Bob says:

called the admin and apparently Jaguar LR denied my claim because they don’t see me as the owner of the vehicle. I was the owner!!!!! I was also told that I won’t be getting a letter. this is to save money. Here is the contact (215) 563-4116

  5. Michael says:

Anyone hear back yet on this?

  6. GRS LLC says:

I submitted a claim form to this lawsuit back in December 2021—due to being out $6,000- and no one has even contacted me. I guess they kept the money to themselves and never paid people who were actually affected by this loss.

    1. Adam says:

Finally heard back- apparently distributions went out on Sept 2nd, and if they didn’t get a distribution, then they will be sending deficiency notices. So frustrating, I provided every document they asked for- seems like they are creating hurdles.

I have not received anything on my end yet though- so we’ll see.

    2. Charlotte Wyckoff says:

i was never contacted about the issue or lawsuit and i own a 2013 range rover sport

  7. Elizabeth Lathrop says:

Same issue. 2014 RR Sport 69k miles. Never got a notice about this. Now I am out of luck. 23k for a new engine or 9k for timing chain. Complete joke…I brought my vehicle in March to check the engine. If they had found this then…It could have resolved this.

  8. Bryan says:

My car experienced this at 50k miles 1pure trash

  9. A. Smith says:

Order granting final approval of their Settlement occurred on March 9, 2022.

    1. A Smith says:

The deadline for claim submissions was 6/7/2022.

  10. Scott Riddle says:

Why are full size Range Rovers the flagship of Land Rover not included in the settlement as they also have this same 5.0 l engine

    1. Steve Johnson says:

My 2014 Range Rover Supercharged LWB had the same “timing chain” problem. The vehicle has less then 90,000 miles on it. Now I’m being told I need to replace the engine. This is upsetting to me.
