Update:

  • Top Class Actions readers reported this settlement paying out up to $25.04 as of Oct. 24, 2023.
  • Congratulations to everyone who filed a claim and got paid!

IKEA agreed to pay $24.25 million as part of a settlement to resolve a class action lawsuit claiming it printed receipts with too many payment card digits, a violation of privacy.

The settlement benefits consumers who used a debit or credit card at any IKEA retail store between Oct. 18, 2017, and Dec. 31, 2019, who received an electronically printed receipt displaying the first six and last four digits of the payment card number.

According to the class action lawsuit, IKEA violated the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA) by printing more than the last five digits of payment card numbers on electronically printed receipts. The retailer allegedly printed the first six and last four digits of card numbers – far more than what is allowed by FACTA.

IKEA is a global home furnishing brand with locations around the United States.

IKEA hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a $24.25 million class action settlement to resolve the FACTA allegations.

Under the terms of the settlement, class members can receive an equal share of the net settlement fund. Exact payments will vary depending on the number of participating claimants. According to the settlement website, each claimant is anticipated to receive between $30 and $60, based on a 10% to 5% claim rate.

No settlement funds will return to IKEA after payments are distributed. Any residual funds will be donated to the Chicago Bar Foundation, a non-profit that supports legal aid organizations in Illinois.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is May 4, 2023.

The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for July 28, 2023.

In order to receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by May 4, 2023.

Ikea needs to be sued for it’s violations against the Americans Disability Act…Really one non motorized wheelchair per store in a store designed to make you walk the whole store to check out ..forced me to have order by mail order as I have heart failure and walking that store with our assistance is just not possible..so ordered my chair before seeing it…If I had seen it and sat on it I wouldn’t have purchased

can I assume that if I made a purchase during the period of concern then the first six digits of my card was displayed on the receipt?

  10. David W says:

I got notifications in the mail for both myself and my wife. I honestly can’t remember what was on the receipt since it was so long ago. We both shopped at IKEA however and I assume that’s why we were contacted. I can only assume we are somehow affected and should apply anyway. Kind of wrong however that unclaimed money goes to the Chicago Bar. There have to be better causes than that.
