Great Lakes Educational Loan Services agreed to pay over $1.275 million as part of a lawsuit settlement to resolve claims it violated debt-collection laws with excessive phone calls.

The settlement benefits Massachusetts residents who received more than two phone calls regarding a debt from Great Lakes Educational Loan Services within a seven-day period since Oct. 28, 2015.

According to plaintiffs in the debt-collection class action lawsuit, Great Lakes violated the Massachusetts Consumer Protection Act and the Massachusetts Debt Collection Regulations by contacting consumers more than twice in a seven-day period.

Great Lakes Educational Loan Services is a federal loan servicer that accepts payments for federally issued education loans. The company may contact borrowers in an attempt to collect on a loan but must comply with debt-collection laws.

Great Lakes hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a $1.275 million class action settlement to resolve these allegations.

Under the terms of the Great Lakes settlement, class members who submit a claim can collect an equal share of the net settlement fund. Settlement payments will vary depending on the number of participating claimants and the net settlement fund after deductions, including attorneys’ fees. No payment estimates are available at this time.

Residual settlement funds may be distributed as a second round of payments to consumers who cashed their first check. If funds do not warrant a second distribution, they will be donated to a charitable recipient approved by the court. No funds from the settlement will revert to Great Lakes.

The deadline for objection is Feb. 27, 2023.

The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for April 6, 2023.

To receive a settlement payment, class members must submit a valid claim form by Feb. 27, 2023.

I wish there was one for California I’ve been with them since like 2003 or 2005 so if you guys know of anything or you can add me that would be good because I get calls from them in California a lot too so I would like to be a part of some sort of class action against them because they ruined my life as well so anyway I hope you can add me and find a way to do it in California thank you.

To everyone complaining about your state not being included… This just happened to be a law that was being broken IN MASSACHUSETTS. Look into your own state’s laws… maybe you could start a lawsuit in your state too.

To everyone asking to be included… READ the article. It’s the same for every single lawsuit. You have to 1) QUALIFY (in this case, you MUST LIVE IN MASSACHUSETTS), and 2) you have to FILE A CLAIM at the website provided (there’s a button… read the entire article and you’ll find it). This website just gives you information about lawsuits. They have nothing to do with you getting money.

  3. Paula says:

Why only 1 state included I and others live in other states all over. I live in Mississippi are we all not included in this settlement

    1. Danielle says:

Because they broke a Massachusetts state law, that’s why! It’s not a law in every state. If you feel they have broken one of your state laws then start a class action. Every class action is brought against companies by the consumer. There’s nothing stopping you.

  4. Debra Caissie says:

What about the state of Texas. They still call me. This should be nationwide.

  5. Kyle Pruitt says:

What about other states?!? We are in Ohio and they harassed my husband for years before we were able to finally pay off the loan!

  7. J L says:

Same here. They call constantly even during the freeze. Should be country wide.

  8. Beverly Coleman says:

Many phone calls from them and I live in Michigan

  9. LISA HAWKINS says:

    Please add me

    1. karin byrne says:

Any other states expected to be added? Has anyone gotten a response?

      1. Danielle says:

No other state will be added. They broke a Ma state law. If you feel they broke a state law then start a class action based off the broken law.

  10. Kristy Anne Johnson says:

Why isn’t this across all states? I’m in Oregon and they harassed me repeatedly during my father’s death and during my surgery less than a year later— they are predatory and relentless no matter what is going on in the persons life!
I had been working with my loans (deferment) but they still harassed me, and wouldn’t stop.
