Great Lakes Educational Loan Services agreed to pay over $1.275 million as part of a lawsuit settlement to resolve claims it violated debt-collection laws with excessive phone calls.
The settlement benefits Massachusetts residents who received more than two phone calls regarding a debt from Great Lakes Educational Loan Services within a seven-day period since Oct. 28, 2015.
According to plaintiffs in the debt-collection class action lawsuit, Great Lakes violated the Massachusetts Consumer Protection Act and the Massachusetts Debt Collection Regulations by contacting consumers more than twice in a seven-day period.Â
Great Lakes Educational Loan Services is a federal loan servicer that accepts payments for federally issued education loans. The company may contact borrowers in an attempt to collect on a loan but must comply with debt-collection laws.
Great Lakes hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a $1.275 million class action settlement to resolve these allegations.Â
Under the terms of the Great Lakes settlement, class members who submit a claim can collect an equal share of the net settlement fund. Settlement payments will vary depending on the number of participating claimants and the net settlement fund after deductions, including attorneys’ fees. No payment estimates are available at this time.
Residual settlement funds may be distributed as a second round of payments to consumers who cashed their first check. If funds do not warrant a second distribution, they will be donated to a charitable recipient approved by the court. No funds from the settlement will revert to Great Lakes.
The deadline for objection is Feb. 27, 2023.
The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for April 6, 2023.
To receive a settlement payment, class members must submit a valid claim form by Feb. 27, 2023.

Why isn’t this across all states? I’m in Oregon and they harassed me repeatedly during my father’s death and during my surgery less than a year later— they are predatory and relentless no matter what is going on in the persons life! I had been working with my loans but they still harassed me.
Hello I’m in Ohio and they took my income taxes from this behind this I’m wondering are they gonna make up for that sine they excusing loans this is not fair too the people that had they taxes taken because they couldn’t afford too paid them back at the time this is crazy
I had been contacted by them. I live in chicago Illinois and had a parent/daughter plus loan
I reside in Ohio and GL pretty much ruined my life with loans and charged for a school I didn’t attend
It’s a SHAME that all states were NOT INCLUDED
I agree—why is it only ONE state? They held loans from all states. To only include the people who the harassed there is kind of a slap in the face to everyone else.
What about South Carolina I had to take one out for my daughter parent plus loan. So please add me
Please add me. I have them as well .
Is there a class action lawsuit against people calling and texting regarding Camp Legune?
I have asked repeatedly for them to stop . Continuing calls and text. I live in Michigan.
I live in West Virginia and still remember how much they harassed me over the years. When can I get some compensation? Also does anyone ever respond to these comments?
You get nothing and like it
I live in Florida, have a loan with great lakes. Is Florida part of the settlement?
I live in NC & have had the same issue in the past!
I have one for Michigan, will they be on the list as well? Great Lakes is horrible.
