CRT price-fixing

UPDATE:

  • This class action settlement is paying out up to $322.43 as of Dec. 7, 2022.
  • Congratulations to everyone who filed a claim and got paid!

LG Electronics and Chunghwa Picture Tubes have reached a class action settlement over claims they engaged in a price-fixing conspiracy with other manufacturers and distributors of cathode ray tube products. If you purchased a cathode ray tube (CRT) product such as a Television or Computer Monitor between March 1, 1995 and Nov. 25, 2007, your rights may be affected by the class action lawsuit and settlement.

Who’s Eligible

Class Members of the CRT antitrust settlement include individuals and businesses that purchased a CRT or product containing CRT (such as a TV or computer monitor) in the following states for their own use and not resale:

  • Arizona, California, Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota Tennessee, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin or the District of Columbia between March 1, 1995 and Nov. 25, 2007
  • Hawaii between June 25, 2002 and Nov. 25, 2007
  • Nebraska between July 20, 2002 and Nov. 25, 2007
  • Nevada between Feb. 4, 1999 and Nov. 25, 2007
Potential Award

Varies. Payments will be determined on a pro rata basis, depending on the number of claims filed, and the number and type of CRT products purchased. According to the settlement website, it is expected that Class Members who submit valid claims will receive a minimum payment of $25.

Proof of Purchase

Class Members do not need to supply proof of purchase when submitting a claim for the CRT settlement, but the Settlement Administrator may request it at a later time.

Proof of purchase can include receipts, invoices and other documents. If you presently have a CRT product, keep it if at all possible. If not, photograph the front and rear of the CRT product, including brand name. Record the serial number, model number, size and any other information that will help identify the manufacturer of the CRT product. Other manufacturers involved in the CRT litigation, such as Panasonic, Samsung, Toshiba and more, may also enter class action settlement agreements at a future date, meaning more money will be available to consumers.

Claim Form Deadline

12/10/2015

UPDATE: California Residents deadline extended until 6/30/2016.

Case Name

Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) Antitrust Litigation, Case No. 07-cv-05944-SC, MDL No. 1917, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

Case Summary

The CRT antitrust litigation alleges that the defendants conspired to fix, raise, maintain or stabilize prices of CRT products, resulting in overcharges to consumers who purchased products such as televisions and computer monitors. The defendants deny any wrongdoing.

On Sept. 19, 2013, a federal judge certified plaintiff classes in 21 states and the District of Columbia. The classes include individuals and businesses that indirectly purchased any CRT product from the defendants for their own use and not for resale from March 1, 1995 through Nov. 25, 2007.

A class action settlement has been reached with LG Electronics Inc., LG Electronics USA Inc. and LG Electronics Taiwan Taipei Co. Ltd., which agree to pay plaintiffs $25 million. A federal judge preliminarily approved this class action settlement on Dec. 9, 2013.

Defendants Chunghwa Picture Tubes Ltd. and Chunghwa Picture Tubes (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd. agreed to a $10 million class action settlement, which received final approval on March 22, 2012. The litigation against all other defendants is ongoing, though attorneys are hoping that they will also agree to settle the class action lawsuit, which could be worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Eligible Class Members do not need to take any action to remain involved in the CRT antitrust class action lawsuit. There is currently no money available to Class Members from the class action settlement, likely because the lawyers are optimistic about reaching a settlement with the remaining defendants in the CRT antitrust litigation.

No further information is available at this time, but Top Class Actions will continue to update readers when and if the other defendants agree to settle the CRT antitrust class action lawsuit and when money becomes available to Class Members.
