CRT price-fixingThe Settlement Administrator for the CRT antitrust class action settlement is now accepting claims. If you purchased a television or computer monitor containing a cathode ray tube from a retailer, you may be entitled to a cash payment from the CRT settlement.

Cathode ray tubes were widely used in televisions and computer monitors before LCD, plasma and LED display technologies increased in popularity. There are two main types of CRTs. Color picture tubes (also called “CPTs” or “TV tubes”) were used in the manufacture of televisions. Color display tubes (also called “CDTs” or “monitor tubes”) were used in the manufacture of computer monitors.

The CRT antitrust class action lawsuit (In re: Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) Antitrust Litigation) alleged certain defendants conspired to fix the prices of CRTs during the period from March 1, 1995 to Nov. 25, 2007, causing consumers and businesses to be overcharged for products containing CRTs.

The defendants in this CRT antitrust litigation include: Chunghwa, Philips, LG Electronics, Panasonic, Hitachi, Toshiba, Samsung, Technicolor SA and Technologies Displays Americas LLC.

The defendants have denied the allegations but agreed to settle the CRT class action lawsuit to avoid the expense and uncertainty of continued litigation. In 2012, the court approved a $10 million class action settlement with defendant Chunghwa. In April 2014, a $25 million settlement with LG was approved. Seven more settlements worth nearly $542 million have been reached, but the court has not yet approved these deals.

A final fairness hearing for the remaining class action settlements will be held on Nov. 13, 2015.

Class Members of the CRT antitrust settlement include individuals and businesses that purchased a CRT or product containing CRT (such as a TV or computer monitor) in the following states for their own use and not resale:

  • Arizona, California, Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota Tennessee, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin or the District of Columbia between March 1, 1995 and Nov. 25, 2007
  • Hawaii between June 25, 2002 and Nov. 25, 2007
  • Nebraska between July 20, 2002 and Nov. 25, 2007
  • Nevada between Feb. 4, 1999 and Nov. 25, 2007

The deadline to file a claim for the CRT settlement is Dec. 7, 2015.
