Comcast

Comcast Corp. has agreed to settle a class action lawsuit alleging it engaged in business practices that resulted in subscribers paying higher prices for cable television services in the Pennsylvania area. If you subscribed to Comcast cable TV services in the Philadelphia area between 2003 and 2008 (or if you are a current Comcast subscriber), you may be eligible for benefits from the class action settlement.

The Comcast class action lawsuit was initially filed in 2003, and alleged that Comcast unlawfully monopolized the Philadelphia television services market. Comcast has vigorously fought the class action lawsuit and appealed the case to the U.S. Supreme Court in 2010. In its Comcast v. Behrend decision, the Supreme Court determined that certification of the Class was inappropriate because the plaintiff had not established that the proposed Class Members had enough in common.

Subsequently, plaintiff Stanford Glaberson filed an amended Comcast class action lawsuit that was limited to Comcast subscribers in the Philadelphia area. Comcast denies the allegations but agreed to settle the class action lawsuit to avoid the cost and risk of a trial. The Comcast class action settlement was preliminarily approved on Dec. 12, 2014.

Who’s Eligible

Class Members of the Comcast class action settlement include all cable television customers who currently subscribe or previously subscribed at any time from Jan. 1, 2003 to Dec. 31, 2008 to cable TV services (above and beyond basic cable) from Comcast or any of its subsidiaries or affiliates. The services must have been provided in one of the following Pennsylvania counties: Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, or Philadelphia.

Potential Award

Former Comcast subscribers are eligible to receive a payment of $15 from the class action settlement.

Current Comcast subscribers can file a claim for one of the following benefits:

  • A one-time credit of $15 off your Comcast bill;
  • Six free pay-per-view movies (an estimated $35.94 value);
  • Two free months of The Movie Channel (an estimated $43.90 value); or
  • Xfinity high speed Internet service subscribers may elect to receive four months free upgrade in Internet service from Performance Level to Blast! service (an estimated $40 value), or one free month upgrade from Blast! service to Extreme 105 service (an estimated $38 value).
Proof of Purchase

When filing a claim, Class Members must provide the address at which they receive(d) Comcast services and attest under the penalty of perjury that they qualify as an eligible Class Member of the Comcast class action settlement.

    Please look into the current Monopoly Comcast has over Boston, MA. Every month we have to scan through our bill to find that they have without consent upped our package and we have to go through at LEAST 1 – 2 hours of speaking with customer service before it is removed, sometimes taking up to 1 week later. We cannot afford to have charges added to our bill unexpectantly and have been experiencing this now since October 2014. Thank you for your consideration in advance.

    I had Comcast off and on for years. They have a habit of setting a price and then raising that price, sometimes a dollar or two at a time. Outages get reimbursed but you must insist on cash or check. Last place , our building offered basic for $10per month and if you wanted more you paid $16 per month, with annual increases. Mine went up to $30. That contract was forever but the building management cancelled because of faulty wiring. Eventually the building and Comcast agreed Comcast would rewire. Everyone’s cable bill went into the hundreds. I dropped Comcast, bought a small antenna and used hotspot WIFI. I do not miss paying the Comcast gougers.

    I recently overpaid Comcast in error. It took 8 weeks to receive a refund. And I had to threaten them with suggesting I should contact a class action attorney at that! But right after my threat with the chat agent, a supervisor called and apologized and the check arrived the next day! These corporations with so many customers have no incentive to do the right thing because in the end, they make more money by doing the wrong thing! So why bother.

    I think weare over looking a larger issue, contracted workers. Comcast contracts workers to do jobs at a set rate of $14 per job and sends them on jobs they are aware will take longer than that. I’ve been having ongoing issues with my service for six years so I started keeping track of the techs that come to my home as to wether they are in house or contracted service techs and asking ahead of time how long the approximate time a service call will be. Turns out when the service dept tells me the service time will be over two hours, comcast sends a contracted service tech at $14 flat service rate, meaning they get paid that amount no matter how long the job takes. When the service rep says the job will take under two hours, they send an in house tech. Basically, the young, BLACK, contracted service tech who will only receive $14 for the service call is put on the longer job. The service calls I tracked for my home took an average of five hours, leaving the tech making only $2.80/hr. They do however, make additional money on equipment, both installation and residual commition. So one tech charged me to replace a box that was faulty and an outside line that was fried because it wasn’t grounded and almost set our house on fire so that he could compensate for his time even though I gave him a $100 tip. I don’t blame him though. He has a family to feed and was at my home for 8 hours for what was supposed to be a two hour call. What a way for comcast to say hundreds of thousands of dollars…ripping off more people. Young black people trying to make an honest living. Jerks!

    Comcast doesn’t care about its customers nor its employees. First review I worked there I got a .25 raise . Yes you read that right Twenty five cents ! Then when the new guy came in and took over Oh he was going to make a BIG difference and don’t worry everybody’s job is safe… Yeah right … Centers started closing down one by one . And the out sourcing began. Mexico and the Philippines and places in CA that didn’t have access to Comcast so they didn’t have to pay benefits and then moved everything out of CA basically so they could buy NBC . That is how they treat employees you walked in for you day of work and packed up your desk and you were gone 30 mins later. Didn’t matter if you had been there 30 days or 30 years you were gone and don’t let the door hit you on the way out … Thats customer service for you. And then Comcast wonders why they can’t keep anyone in a call center because they don’t train ppl long enough and don’t pay for nothing and make the commission to where you can’t make money either and you then don’t make your quota and your out the door …. Life is like a bowl of chocolates there lol

    P.S. I think the 33RD degree of FREEMASONRY has ALOT to answer for and that only comments I see on this page are from WOMEN…LOL

  8. Sheri Leorna says:

    Brian L. Roberts…the CEO of COMCAST look him up on WIKIPEDIA. He is more concerned with DOD contracts than the bread and butter CASH COW from regular Americans that has made him more powerful and monetarily wealthy than WHOMEVER the President. How many Satellites does COMCAST own and control? We live in a PLUTARCHIAN society. The smallest wealthiest class run this PLANET and have ALL THE POWER and I literally mean (the disaster button) kind, not Democrats and Republican’s. I suggest shutting off cable and re learn the value of the local library.

  9. Mary says:

    I live in a small town between Knoxville and Chattanooga TN. I pay 124.00 a month for a step above basic cable. They have monopilized the TN Valley. Along with Athens Utilities Board, a privately owned utility company that is screwing the customers left and right. My utilily bill is a joke. They charge us for water coming in the house, then charge us double that amount for water going out. If I did not use any power, water or gas for a month, I would still pay close to $70.00 in \availabilty fees\. It’s bs. Seniors have yo choose between heat and meds. No money for food or TV…which you can’t watch unless you have cable bc the network stations are 50 miles away. These people need help. I have lived all over the country and have never seen such a gross company monopoly of our basic needs. Water, electric, gas and sewer. These people fought in WWII, Vietnam, Desert Storm and Desert Shield. They DESERVE to be able to afford heat and water for their family. For themselves. And cable should be FREE for vets who fought overseas.

  10. The Truth says:

    How about MORE states sue this predatory $hit corporation? They continue to raise rates every month offering the same or less than before. More and more people are cutting the cord because a smart person no longer needs it.

    Truth.

    1. Vanessa says:

      Agreed. It’s a joke that this is only in PA.

      It makes me laugh that they deny any wrong doing. Please. I know that is how it always works, but I can’t help but feel really angry knowing how they continue to blatantly lie, cheat, and steal from this country and nothing happens to any of their executives.
