Chase Bank has agreed to pay $11.5 million to settle a class action lawsuit alleging the bank harmed credit card accountholders’ credit scores and even required them to pay on debts that were discharged in Chapter 7 bankruptcy.
The Chase credit card class action lawsuit alleged that the debts on Class Members’ accounts that were discharged in bankruptcy were sold to third parties, known as debt buyers; however, Chase failed to update accountholders’ credit reports. Instead, the credit reports reflected that the debts were sold or charged off.
The class action lawsuit claimed that Chase’s failure to update these credit card accounts reflected negatively on Class Members’ credit scores. Further, some Class Members, concerned about the affects of the allegedly falsely reported debt on their credit score, continued to pay on debts that had been discharged in bankruptcy.
Chase Bank says it did not attempt to collect on discharged debts, but has agreed to pay $11.5 million to end the class action lawsuit.
Class Members may be entitled to a full refund of any amount they paid on a Chase Bank credit card debt that was discharged in Chapter 7 bankruptcy, along with a portion of the settlement award.
The deadline to opt out of the class action settlement agreement is July 18, 2018.
Who’s Eligible
Class Members include “all individuals (i) who maintained a Credit Card Account with CBUSA; (ii) whose account CBUSA charged off and then sold to a Debt Buyer on or after January 1, 2008, and (iii) who post-sale sought and obtained a discharge of the debt as a result of his/her bankruptcy under Chapter 7 of the Bankruptcy Code, through and including the date of the Bankruptcy Court’s preliminary approval of the Settlement.”
Potential Award
A full refund of the amount paid on an affected Chase Bank credit card account, along with a share of the settlement award.

Anyone who recieved a “reimbursement” check, but not a class action settlement check? My husband and I recieved our “reimbursement” checks in December and we were told we’d receive our “class action settlement” check separately (when everyone else recieved theirs). Still waiting…

Anybody know of I need to report this on my taxes next year? And will I be getting a 1099 form?
hope you get your check soon Jim
I got my check for $438.75 on 4-3-2019. I took it to my bank and they wanted to put a 3 day hold on it. So I took it to US Bank and they cashed it no problem. Cost me 7 dollars but it’s worth it to me. They just asked me what the lawsuit was about. They did say they have never seen a check like that before.
