CafePress will pay $500,000 to resolve the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) claims that it failed to prevent a 2019 data breach and attempted to cover up the cyberattack.

The settlement benefits consumers whose Social Security numbers were exposed in a CafePress data breach in 2019.

The FTC filed a lawsuit against CafePress in 2022, claiming that the company failed to implement reasonable cybersecurity measures to protect sensitive data on its network and then tried to cover up the breach instead of informing consumers. As a result, hackers were allegedly able to gain access to plain text Social Security numbers of over 184,000 consumers, inadequately encrypted passwords and password reset question answers.

CafePress is a custom gift vendor that sells clothes, cards and other personalized gifts.

CafePress was ordered to pay $500,000 in a settlement with the FTC. Some of the funds from this settlement are now being used to fund payments to affected consumers.

According to the FTC website, claimants could receive a cash payment. These payments will vary depending on the number of valid claims filed. No payment estimates are available at this time.

There is no exclusion or objection deadline for the settlement.

The settlement was finalized in a decision by the FTC on June 24, 2022.

Consumers can receive a settlement payment by filing a valid claim form by March 10, 2024.
