Blue Buffalo pet food

The natural pet food company Blue Buffalo has agreed to pay $32 million in order to settle allegations that it falsely claimed their products were free of poultry byproducts, corn, wheat, soy and artificial preservatives.

Pet food competitor Nestle Purina PetCare Co. along with plaintiffs in 13 separate class action lawsuits challenged the “True Blue Promise” label after claiming that several investigations found those ingredients within Blue Buffalo products.

The Blue Buffalo class action lawsuit alleged that plaintiffs paid a higher price for the “natural” pet food because they were misled by false advertisements that Blue Buffalo was a quality choice compared to other products on the market.

According to the Blue Buffalo class action lawsuit settlement, Class Members will receive $5 for every $50 they spent on various Blue Buffalo products over a seven-year claim period.

Blue Buffalo stands by its labeling and denies it did anything wrong, however the pet food manufacturer has agreed to the terms of the settlement in order to avoid the cost of further litigation.

  1. Tony says:

There’s a reason why they ask for receipts/proof of purchase. They ask because it’ll deter the pathetic people of this country to get an easy $200. They could and should completely shut out those who don’t have proof, but instead they capped your return at $10 to be fair. What wouldn’t be fair is if anybody can get a piece of the settlement when they never bought the product. Instead of complaining that you have to have a receipt, think of another option to prove you purchased the product. That would be called a solution. But that’s what Murica is about. Stupid people complaining about stupid stuff and playing the victim.

    1. Madison says:

Tony…..I received an on-line notice because of them tracking my charge card transactions. No need for a receipt as they are well aware of my purchases. They contacted me with a claim form and claim number, so your ranting about no receipt, no refund is a stupid statement. If your thought process is such, maybe you are one of those trying to get something for nothing.

  2. Jeffrey McFadden says:

I did participate in the loyalty program… But I certainly don’t have every receipt from every single bag…my dogs are 8 yrs old and have eaten nothi g but bb since adulthood.

  3. MARLA SKAGGS says:

I have tried several times to file a claim but tells me I have made too many contacts this week. WTF…this is the first time and I can not get it to go thru. My dog died because of Purina. I will feed my other dog home grown home cooked food. If I eat it then it is good enough for her.

  4. Kathie Marold says:

How can I file a claim? My dog had to have bladder stone surgery as a result of eating this food. The vet said that was the reason. The surgery was about $800. I would like some compensation. PetSmart was able to give me all of my purchases via email. I bought this product 41 times!

  5. Concerned Lady says:

IAMS changed to bad (chemicals) since Proctor & Gamble bought company in 1999! Ferret owners know it! IAMS has sickened and killed many! I say Google: (name) dangers or recalls or lawsuits…

    1. Sharon says:

Ever see the horrible experiments Proctor and Gamble does to innocent animals? Horrible. Research it and buy other products. Next time you go shopping, read the label. If its a P&G produt, buy something else and LET THEM KNOW WHY.

  6. Brandy McKinney says:

The form keeps telling me my email address is invalid when it is not. When I tried to contact them to tell them their form is not working, I once again told my email address is invalid. Very frustrating, very irritating. Entirely too much work for 10 stupid dollars. Or perhaps that’s the plan.

    1. Admin says:

Brandy, Were you able to file your claim? The site is still accepting claims. Call the admin @ 844-245-3772 if you need help.

      1. Carol says:

I sent in a completed form, along with my receipts totaling $1,320.50. I sent in a copy of the post card that had the class member ID number on it. It was sent on 4/7/2016 , and I have a receipt from the post office. I sent an inquiry
in and was notified by e mail on Nov. 18, 2016 that there is no claim or documents under the REF NUM I gave! I just now left a message on the voice mail (1-844-245-3772) stating what has happened so far. I guess I’ll see what happens next!
(and yes, I do keep ALL receipts we spend on our Shepherd, from food, treats, baths, nail trims and vet visits) but that’s just me.

  7. LS says:

I didn’t keep any receipts but I was able to get proof of purchase for the last 2-3 years through the rewards programs of Petsmart and Petco (where I purchased all my BB products from). Had to jump through a few hoops to get the purchase history but I did get it. I suggest you all do the same if possible…

  8. Eileen Hudic says:

We spent $2.98 on a can of Wolf Creek Stew which in turn cost us over $7000.00 in vet bills after it almost killed our Great Dane.

    1. Big D Vick says:

Wolf Creek Stew sounds yummy for thy tummy!

  9. DONT B IGNORANT MURICA says:

Dont be ignorant of this !!! (Pet food COMPETITOR Nestle Purina PetCare Co.) We started our dogs on Blue Buffalo years back after having one die & others being poisoned by Walmarts Ol Roy ( RAT POISON) dinner rounds. We looked at dog food ingredients & tried them on several. Best formulated brands by Science Diet, Purina, Eukanuba & Iams all gave stomach issues & soft stools. Blue Buffalo has changed our dogs health for the better, inside & out. Im sure the others out there are not much better than Ol Roy. I had a friend that swore by Eukanuba, but that was years back. Possibly they turned to the dark side also ? If you eat corn hard shell tacos from Taco Bell for a week, Then eat chicken strips from Chik Fil A for a week. Let me know how those weeks went. We are lied to everyday by government, businesses & lawyers. You just have to pick the best one after trying them all out. The only way to keep them honest. If you fall for the media crap, you failed ! Election is coming up, think about it before you vote. What have these candidates done for their state ? Good or Bad ?

    1. Connie says:

Good point! Curious if all these folks are still using Blue Buffalo. I hate attorneys, our broken legal system, and frivolous law suits that cost us all money in the end. I suppose if you are really interested in the purest form of food for your animal, you will feed him from your fridge and not purchase processed bagged and canned goods. I would not eat canned stew meat every day ….. and if I did, I would not be surprised of failed health and sickness.

      1. Cheryl says:

I continue to feed my 2 dogs and 2 cats Blue Buffalo. They like it and there have never been any issues of them getting sick, loose stool, vomiting, or death.

  10. Ms. B says:

I was able to go out to Petco and Petsmart and print transaction/rewards that show proof of purchase. Pathetic that I can show over $600 worth of dog food bought and they only have to pay me $60. They’ve already made their money off of us. I switched to another dog food when I read what was going on. It would take a lot more than their word to make me switch back. At least I was able to fill out the form and load proof.

    1. WestieMom says:

Same here. They should have to refund the total of the receipts that we submit.
