Apple will pay $14.8 million as part of a class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims it wrongfully stored on third-party servers the iCloud data of those who had a subscription.

The settlement benefits individuals who paid for an iCloud subscription at any time between Sept. 16, 2015, and Jan. 31, 2016. Class Members must have had a U.S. mailing address associated with their account to be eligible for the settlement.

Apple iCloud is a cloud storage system on Apple products such as iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, and more. The base version of iCloud storage is free, but larger storage capacity requires a monthly subscription fee.

However, according to a class action lawsuit against Apple, the tech giant failed to properly store user data on iCloud servers.

Plaintiffs in the class action lawsuit contend that Apple did not actually store customer data in 2015 and 2016. Instead, the company allegedly distributed the data among third-party cloud servers. 

According to the plaintiffs, customers would not have paid for an iCloud subscription if they knew Apple didn’t have the infrastructure to support cloud storage or would have paid a significantly lower monthly fee.

By misleading customers about how their information was stored, Apple allegedly violated the terms of its iCloud contracts along with its terms and conditions.

Apple hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay $14.8 million to resolve these allegations.

Under the terms of the settlement, Class Members can receive a cash payment. Exact payment amounts will vary based on the number of claims filed with the settlement. Lower payments will be distributed if a large number of claims are submitted, and vice versa.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is May 23, 2022. 

The final approval hearing for the Apple iCloud servers settlement is scheduled for Aug. 4, 2022.

Class Members have until May 23, 2022, to elect to receive their payment through either ACH transfer or check, but no claim form is required to benefit from the settlement. 

Class Members who have a monthly iCloud subscription will receive a payment on their Apple account to pay for this monthly charge, assuming they do not opt for an alternative payment method. 

Class Members who have a U.S. address on file with Apple but don’t pay for a monthly iCloud subscription will receive a physical check in the mail, unless they opt for another payment option.
