Apple agreed to a $1.8 million class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims that it misrepresented the security and value of its gift cards that were later redeemed by unauthorized third parties.

The Apple settlement benefits consumers who purchased eligible gift cards between March 2018 and July 2020 whose gift cards were redeemed by an unknown third party before the consumers could redeem them and who were not offered a refund or replacement.

The settlement also benefits a subclass of the same consumers from California who purchased gift cards in California between May 2017 and February 2018, and whose gift cards were redeemed by an unknown third party before the consumers could redeem them and who were not offered a refund or replacement.

Plaintiffs in the class action lawsuit claim Apple failed to secure its gift cards, causing consumers to lose the value of these cards when unauthorized third parties redeemed them before the authorized customer was able to. Consumers argue that Apple misrepresented the value and security of its gift cards by failing to warn customers that their gift cards could be stolen.

Apple gift cards can be used to purchase Apple products, apps, music and other products through Apple’s various online stores.

Apple hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a $1.8 million settlement to resolve the gift card class action lawsuit.

Under the terms of the settlement, class members can receive up to a 100% refund of their purchased Apple gift card values. If the number of claims exceeds the net settlement fund, the payments will be reduced proportionately.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is Jan. 8, 2024.

The final approval hearing for the Apple gift card class action lawsuit settlement is scheduled for Jan. 17, 2024.

In order to receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by Jan. 17, 2024.

We (our family) have had SO many problems with these cards – shame on a multi-million dollar corporation like Apple for KNOWING that this issue existed and not doing anything about it.
Now, to make it even worse, you have to have “Proof of Purchase”…

…Sales receipt from the App Store & iTunes Gift Card(s) that are the subject of the claim that includes the purchase date, original purchase price and the gift card number(s) …. Seriously?!! No offense but who the hell keeps their proof of purchase from 3-5 years ago?! Not me! I’d be drowning in receipts!
    Again, shame on Apple …

I did have some issue with this gift cards too. Just like what the other people are saying in this comments that who keeps their receipts for many years and just hide. What about those gift cards that you just received as a gift and when you’re about to use it. You’ll just find out that it’s already been redeemed or no value anymore. Just like of what I received of this no value gift card. This isn’t fair at all
