Apple will pay $100 million and make sweeping changes to its App Store as part of a class action settlement resolving claims it violated antitrust laws with its app development monopoly.

The settlement benefits iOS app developers whose applications or in-app purchases were sold on the Apple App Store between 2015 and 2021 and who earned less than $1 million for every year they had a developer account between 2015 and 2021.

Apple’s App Store hosts countless apps from numerous developers. According to the company’s website, the App Store allows developers to connect to over 1.5 billion devices across 175 regions.

App developers filed an antitrust class action lawsuit against Apple in 2019, claiming the tech giant maintained an unlawful monopoly on distribution services. According to the plaintiff, Apple used pricing restrictions, a “supracompetitive” 30 percent commission fee, and other tactics to limit what developers can upload to the App Store.

As a result of these tactics, Apple allegedly stifled fair competition and “cut unlawfully into what would have been developers’ earnings in a competitive landscape.” The Apple class action lawsuit contends the tech giant therefore violated federal antitrust laws.

Apple hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay $100 million to resolve the app developers’ claims.

Under the terms of the Apple app developer settlement, app developers will be able to recover cash payments from the $100 million settlement fund.

Settlement payments will vary depending on a developer’s App Store revenue, according to the settlement website, but could range from $250 to $30,000.

In addition to providing cash payments to Class Members, the settlement makes changes to App Store policies.

Going forward, U.S. app developers who enroll in Apple’s Small Business Program will be eligible for a 15 percent commission. This commission rate is guaranteed for three years following settlement approval.

Other non-monetary relief includes further term changes, an expansion of price points from under 100 to over 500, an appeals process for rejected apps, and an annual transparency report.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is March 21, 2022.

The final approval hearing for the Apple app developer settlement is scheduled for June 7, 2022.

In order to receive settlement payments, Class Members must submit a valid claim form by May 20, 2022.

For those of you commenting add me I’ve got this many iPhones, etc, etc…. this settlement is for any developers who had a contract or sold their app, games, things of that nature on the Apple Apps Store. This isn’t necessarily for consumers who owned/owns an iPhone, iPad, etc, etc…. I’m sorry just trying to help. Also you have to actually click on the claim form website link (if there is one) or fill the form out usually near the bottom of the class action settlement page for each specific claim & if you qualify the settlement advisor will either be in touch with you or you will receive a check for the portion of the settlement they believe you have rights to. I hope this isn’t more confusing for any one. I’m not very good at putting things in layman’s terms. Have a great day, Be Breezy, Be Safe, Stay Safe, Blessed Be 🙌 💛💯🙏
