wildfire in forestExperts look ahead to what may be another extreme fire season for California.

Conditions that made 2017 and 2018 so devastating for California may repeat this year, posing a risk of more wildfires. State officials, firefighters, and weather experts alike worry about the dangers that the weather this summer could pose for California and its residents.

In mid-June, the National Weather Service issued a red flag warning about fire conditions in the Sacramento Valley and the foothills surrounding it.

In California wildfire news, The Los Angeles Times reports that there was high rainfall this winter, which prompted significant vegetation growth. As that growth dries out this summer, more possible fuel for fire is created.

In mid-June high winds and low humidity hit the Sacramento Valley, experts worried that conditions could be optimal for fires to start and move through the area.

The warning for high risk of fire reportedly affected elevations below 2,000 feet, according to the lead forecaster for the National Weather Service in Sacramento, Jim Matthews.

Although the fire warning for Sacramento County only lasted a week, the first official days of summer were hot ones for that area of California, with highs in the 80s to mid-90s. These high temperatures didn’t help the situation.

Matthews went on to note that “temperature is an ingredient, but the driving forces are the fuels, winds, and humidity,” according to the Los Angeles Times. Unfortunately, it seems like a number of concerning ingredients are in the mix this year.

Similar conditions made last year’s fire season California’s deadliest in history. Notably, the Mendocino Complex Fire of last year was the largest one in California history. It was a complex of the River Fire and Ranch Fire. It surpassed the year’s earlier Thomas Fire to become the state’s largest.

Together, the River Fire and Ranch Fire burned a total of 459,123 acres of land.

Now, experts worry that similar fires may sweep through California this year and may cause extensive damage. Gov. Gavin Newsom spoke to the potential devastating for the state, saying “we just can’t take this anymore. The state can’t take 2018 again. Can’t do 2017.”

And yet, another summer like the last two may occur this year, threatening lives, property, and natural resources.

Unfortunately, this year’s fires have already started and have made headlines in California wildfire news.

The San Francisco Chronicle says that two fires have already been dubbed “notable” this season—the Sand Fire and the McMillan Fire.

But, those are not the only two fires that have hit California already this year. Among a number of other fires, a fire named the Rock Fire has reached 2,242 acres in late June. A new wildland fire started in the San Antonio Valley in late June, and another fire was stopped in unincorporated San Leandro.
