Goop website class action overview:

  • Who: Jovan Campbell has filed a class action complaint against Goop Inc.
  • What: The lawsuit claims that Goop’s website is not accessible to the blind or visually impaired.
  • Where: The lawsuit was filed in federal court in New York’s Southern District.

Jovan Campbell filed a class action lawsuit against Goop, claiming the company’s website design is incompatible with software that helps blind people.

Campbell, who is blind, claims she wanted to buy Goop brand face cream but could not due to the access barriers she encountered on the website. These barriers violate the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Goop class action claims.

The complaint explains that blind consumers access websites by using keyboards (not a mouse) in conjunction with software that vocalizes content that is on a computer screen. Unless websites are compatible with this software, they exclude blind customers. What this means for website design is that all information on a website must be capable of being rendered into text, according to the Goop website class action.

Well-known organizations, including the federal government, established guidelines for making websites accessible to blind and visually impaired people.

“These guidelines are universally followed by most large business entities and government agencies to ensure their websites are accessible,” the Goop class action states.

Goop website lacks alt text necessary for screen readers, class action claims

The Goop website does not include alternative text, which is invisible code embedded beneath images, the class action alleges.

The lack of alt text means that the screen-reading software has no way to describe the images displayed on the screen, according to the Goop class action. The lawsuit also says the website lacks accommodations for screen readers to fill out online forms.

These deficiencies mean blind and visually impaired people cannot make purchases on the website, the Goop class action claims. It identifies pop-up windows, multiple carousels, problems with iFrames and general navigation, including requiring a mouse to complete a transaction, as other problems of the Goop website.

“Due to Goop.com’s inaccessibility, Plaintiff and blind customers must in turn spend time, energy, and/or money to make their purchases at traditional brick-and-mortar retailers,” the lawsuit states. “Some blind customers may require a driver to get to the stores or require assistance in navigating the stores.”

Goop is not the first company to be sued due to its lack of accessibility to blind or visually impaired individuals. Consumers filed class actions against Bananagrams, Marriott, Talbots, Synchrony, Yankee Candles, Choice Hotels, Procter & Gamble, Barstool Sports, Johnson & Johnson, FanDuel, Etsy and many others.
