Man boobsMost individuals know what “man boobs” are and think of an overweight man with a beer belly and a sagging chest in need of support.

However, gynecomastia is a medical condition that goes beyond just being linked with obesity and can have a huge physical and psychological impact on sufferers of the condition and their loved ones.

Gynecomastia: The Facts

Gynecomastia is a condition where male breast development occurs in response to a lowered ratio of testosterone to estrogen. Males have both hormones in their body, but testosterone is the dominant hormone for males, while estrogen is the dominant hormone for females.

When there is a hormonal imbalance and too much estrogen is present in a man’s body, his breast tissues starts to develop, giving the characteristic “man boobs.”

Gynecomastia: The Causes

Several causes may lead men to develop man boobs. Natural hormone changes during puberty and the natural decline of testosterone in men over 50 lead some men to develop increased breast tissue growth. Health conditions such as hypogonadism, tumors, hypothyroidism and kidney or liver failure may also contribute.

Street drugs and alcohol can also cause gynecomastia, with alcohol being the most commonly seen cause. Many men develop a “beer gut” along with man boobs. Specifically, the hops in beer is converted to estrogen in the body, and since the liver is taxed by excess alcohol consumption, it cannot remove the estrogen, then estrogen becomes dominant in the body.

Medications can also lead to gynecomastia. Common male-dominant drugs such as hair loss medications and anabolic steroids or androgens are notorious for disrupting hormones and causing man boobs as the problem while trying to treat another condition.

Risperdal, an antipsychotic drug, is well-known to be linked to male breast growth, in some cases men and adolescent males developed breasts as large as a size 46DD while taking Risperdal.

Gynecomastia: The Treatment

The cures for gynecomastia depend on the cause. If gynecomastia is caused by a medication or alcohol, sometimes just stopping the drug may allow the condition to reverse. If it is caused by hypothyroidism or hypogonadism, treating the underlying cause may address the male breast growth. No medications have been FDA approved to treat gynecomastia, but some have had success with medications used to treat breast cancer.

The most common way to address man boobs is through gynecomastia surgery. Gynecomastia surgery usually produces relatively quick results and can be life-changing for those who have suffered the emotional and psychological consequences of having large male breasts.

Liposuction and mastectomy are the two gynecomastia surgery options to reduce man boobs. Liposuction involves removal of fat in the breast while keeping the breast gland tissue. A mastectomy removes breast gland tissue through small incisions in the breast. It is considered less invasive and has a shorter recovery time.
