Teen in hoodie holds his head in his hands - boys & girls club

A 63-year-old man has been arrested after being accused of sexual assaults committed against children that he allegedly found through the Boys & Girls Club, according to TB News Watch.

The man, Edward Gilberds, was arrested March 11, 2021, by the Thunder Bay police. He has since been released from custody, but has a future court appearance date of June 1, 2021.

The alleged assaults occurred back between 1973 and 1982, and Thunder Bay police became aware of the alleged incidents in 2017, per a media release, CBC Canada reported.

The Thunder Bay police have identified four victims who were between the ages of 6 and 14 at the time of the alleged assaults.

According to the police, Gilberds found his victims through the East End Boys & Girls Club, though at the time of these incidents it was commonly known as the Wayside Club.

The investigation is ongoing, and police are seeking any other victims or potential witnesses.

This is not the first time a Boys & Girls Club organization has been linked with sexual assault against children in its care.

The Boys & Girls Club of America has recently become embroiled in allegations of sexual abuse after a six-month investigation by Hearst Connecticut Media in 2019 found more than 250 report of child sex abuse within the BGCA, according to CT Insider.

Indeed, Gilberds is among many who have allegedly used their positions within a Boys & Girls Club to scout potential victims and then use their authority to enact their abuse.

The late Dr. Reginald Archibald, a doctor who volunteered with the then-Madison Square Boys’ Club (now the Madison Square Boys & Girls Club) in New York City in the 1940s through 1960s, was accused in civil lawsuits of sexual abuse by now-grown victims who were children at the time of the abuse, per the CT Post. Like with Gilberds, accusations of the abuse did not come out for decades after it allegedly took place.

In another lawsuit, 12 men allege James Collins, a former employee of the Boys & Girls Club of Northern Westchester in New York, abused children under his care in the club from the 1970s through the early 1990s.

If you or a loved one has suffered sexual assault or abuse within the Boys & Girls Club, you may be able to file a lawsuit and pursue compensation.
