George Tyndall, the former University of Southern California gynecologist accused of sexually abusing his patients, died on Wednesday according to multiple news outlets that spoke with his attorney.
Tyndall was found in his home in Westlake by a friend who went to check on him after he was not picking up his phone, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Tyndall’s death appeared to be from natural causes and no autopsy was performed, the Los Angeles Medical Examiner’s Office told the L.A. Times. Tyndall’s criminal defense lawyer, Leonard Levine, told The Associated Press there was “no evidence of foul play or suicide.”
Tyndall was at home on $1.3 million bail while awaiting a trial that was scheduled for next year on accusations of sexual abuse from 16 former patients, part of a group of hundreds of former patients who accused the former USC gynecologist of inappropriate touching, the L.A. Times wrote.
With Tyndall dead, that criminal trial will no longer occur.
Tyndall always maintained his innocence and Levine told CNN that Tyndall was looking forward to his day in court.
“I feel very strongly that justice was denied for all of us,” Ventura County sex crimes prosecutor Audry Nafziger told the L.A. Times. “I wanted to see him convicted for what he did.”
The newspaper reported that Nafziger had accused Tyndall of inappropriately touching her and photographing her genitals while an undergraduate in 1992.
“I’m so disappointed,” former patient Lucy Chi told the L.A. Times. “I’ve been afraid for five years, ever since the story came out, that we’d never see justice.”
Chi had planned to testify against Tyndall at Tyndall’s criminal trial.
USC made more than $1B in payments related to sex abuse allegations
USC has made more than $1 billion in payments stemming from the USC sex abuse accusations against Tyndall, the AP reported.
A $215 million class action settlement was reached in 2019 to resolve sexual assault claims against the former USC gyno.
