Roblox has fallen victim to a major data breach that saw the personal information of almost 4,000 people leaked, including names, dates of birth and physical addresses.

The data breach affects those who attended the Roblox Developer Conference between 2017 and 2020, PC Gamer reports.

“Roblox is aware of a third-party security issue where there were indications of unauthorized access to limited personal information of a subset of our creator community,” a Roblox spokesperson told PC Gamer in a statement.

“We engaged independent experts to support the investigation led by our information security team. Those who are impacted will receive an email communicating the next steps we are taking to support them. We will continue to be vigilant in monitoring and vetting the cyber security posture of Roblox and our third-party vendors.”

The original breach reportedly happened Dec. 18, 2020, when a total of 3,943 accounts were compromised. The leak contained names, phone numbers, email addresses, dates of birth, physical addresses and even T-shirt size.

Leaked information appeared online

Troy Hunt, creator of the website Have I Been Pwned, brought attention to the leak July 18 after “multiple people” reportedly notified him that private data had been published online.

The identifying data opens up individuals to the risk of online identity theft, as well as other risks. Roblox’s Developer Program welcomes children as young as 13 to participate.

Hunt reported that everyone affected had been contacted, with minimally affected developers getting an apology email and those more seriously affected being offered a year of identity protection.

This is not the first time Roblox has been in the news this year for consumer-related issues.

In June, Roblox agreed to pay $10 million as part of a class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims that it took advantage of children by allowing them to make excessive purchases, then deleting any related content in a cover-up.

According to the Roblox class action lawsuit, the online gaming platform — which caters primarily to children — takes advantage of children by allowing them to make purchases and then deleting the content under the guise of content moderation. Parents are allegedly unable to seek refunds for the deleted content.
